Post-Game Talk: Leafs Lose 4-2

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

There's so much wrong.

Berube has no offensive system. There has to be a way to play strong defensively without neutering everything offensively.

Marner is horrible. Nylander is probably one of the worst perpetrators of ineffective powerplay play on this team. There's no attack, no speed, just slow and lazy telegraphed passes.

Matthews can't skate or shoot, he should be sitting until the playoffs even if we end up in a wild card. Rielly is somehow close to being our worst D. We have no futures so we'll be stuck in mediocrity for another decade after this Era fails.

Just fire Berube and bring Boudreau in the interim.

He should be bought out. Kampf is a more effective player. I know what this org is going to do, because they spent so much on Laughton they will force feed him throughout the line up to no avail. He should be in the press box or in the minors, or better yet back in Philly.
I cannot believe that Treliving got fleeced for a 1st and a very good prospect for barely a 4th line player. Embarrassingly bad.

The thought of trading another 1st and blue chip Minten for a #6 D man is even worse. Carlo is another loser. Boston literally robbed Toronto at gun point on this deal!

Mark my words, Boston and Philly will love Minten and Grebenkin respectively and furthermore, make it further and faster into contender status with the significant assets we gave them. Remember, we practically gifted a generational goaltender to Boston for peanuts. This organization never learns.

You are right. Minten will be a consistent 30 goal scoring 2nd line C with elite defensive capabilities. Let’s see if the Bruins can draft a number 1D or a number 1C with the 1st that Toronto gave him that deal as well. Hahahahaha

When will Toronto learn? Carlo is a f***ing scrub.

Calgary, Avs and Rangers coming up.

Things could get ugly fast.

The best thing that can happen to this team is WC2.

If the Leafs fall to WC2 and get to go through the Metro and have any success, I bet the league will change the division format immediately.

People really need to think, why would an organization like Boston that values grit and determination deem Carlo expendable at 28 with term on his contract? The guy sucks, Benoit does his job for a fraction of the price. Once again conned by the Bruins.

Doubtful, the fans want a retool or rebuild, management will squeeze every drop out of this lemon regarding sales prior to even entertaining the idea.

Yes, that Carlo trade is comical. On top of it, the guy does not want to be here. You can see it with his play and in interviews. He is miserable.

Nah, he was awful, especially defensively.

Really struggled to exit the zone, lost a ton of board battles, couldn't read the situation.

That's a little unusual for him, but I can see why he didn't play alot, especially when Domi was going decently
Marner was the weak link on that line I’m not sure why were talkin about bobby he was first on the forechecc finishing hits and doing his best he looked like he was out there by himself how much faster he was then everyone else on his line him niccy and jt looked decent for a couple shifts

I don’t care where we are in the standings, having watched almost all of our games this year, we just aren’t good. By far the worst Leafs team in the past 5 seasons. The last 4 seasons we carried the play most games, while this year we look like the weaker team most nights. Hemmed into our own zone more than the other way around, outshot, outskated, outplayed.

I wouldn’t say we’re trash, but we’re thoroughly mediocre, we play like a playoff bubble team that has a better than .500 record mostly due to strong goaltending.

I do think Berube is probably a shit coach for this roster. We’re built to be creative and risk taking in the o-zone, and to defend with a bit more of a high risk pressure style in the d-zone, where we allow some better chances against but tend to win the puck back fast. But under Berube we collapse around the net defensively, so we get hemmed into our own zone constantly, never first to the puck along the boards. And offensively we’re far too cautious/conservative, super predictable out there.

The players are also not playing well, but I think Berube’s style is a poor fit for them.

As for tonight, no Leaf was particularly good (other than maybe Willy), but the standout poor performance was Marner. Overall he’s been our best player this year, this game was an outlier, but man, he was REALLY bad tonight. Bobbling the puck everywhere, terrible turnovers, making nothing happen offensively, the worst regular season game I’ve seen from him in some time.

I think Laughton and Carlo have to go in the summer as part of the big retool.
Agree. It is just a tough pill to swallow giving up two 1sts, Minten and Greb. It makes absolutely no sense at all. What the hell was Treliving thinking. He should be fired because of those two trades honestly.

Because the poster asked why his minutes were low and he was awful in his own zone.

That doesn't mean Marner was good, because he wasn't, but when a guy like McMann is doing so many little things wrong, especially in his own zone, you'll see that. Add in Domi playing decent, Robertson too and it's pretty easy to see why

umm... when the teams check hard without time and space well there is hardly anything this core has shown that they can do to breakthrough its been 7+ years btw...

They have had 8 effing seasons to learn how to do that. You are telling me in season 9 they still don't know what it takes? For the love of Jesus, blow this shit up and just restart from scratch. That quote right there is why ROR and all the other TDL acquisitions got out of dodge as quick as they could.

This feels 100% hopeless, pointless. A core of mental midgets who are crying because things are hard. Talk about loserville.

I thought Nylander was good... battled hard. I didn't see Marner or Matthews do anything near what their salary calls for.

To be fair, this was the result I expected. I will double down, not winning a round, and not getting it to seven games if this is what they bring to the table.

We'll be lucky to hold on to a wild card spot. The other teams are playing with a purpose, we are yet again, as Sheldon to elequently put it, purposeless.

He’s certainly made some good moves, but man, also a bunch of moves that really make you question his competence.

The Laughton and Carlo trades sucked, Berube was a bad hire for this roster (IMO), and the Klingberg, Reavo and Hakanpaa signings were all SO CLEARLY terrible ideas from day 1. Kampf contract pretty bad too.

I do like the Stolarz, Tanev, OEL and Benoit signings a lot, although Tanev and OEL are older and he gave them significant term - good moves for today, but could age poorly. And he did manage to get Matthews and Willy resigned - to expensive deals, but better than losing them. So it somewhat balances out overall, but yeah, there’s been a lot of massively head scratching moves.
