Surely this sounded funnier in your head.

Sorry my fellow Blues fans, Schenn didn't go from having a really brutal contract to "premium pick + no retention" just because he had a nice 15 game stretch with Kyrou & Holloway in conjunction with a rising cap. It's still not a very good contract, the Blues need Centers, he's a good leader and one of the last of True Blues still on the roster, and I don't really see him going anywhere. You'd really tear the guts out of the team if he left and unlike other vets on the team (Faulk/Krug/Saad) he still has a role and provides a value to the team on and off the ice.

Honestly, I don't know. Going into the season, Schenn certainly had negative value. He's bounced back and has improved offensively and defensively, but he's also playing with Holloway and Kyrou, so that's a big help. His expected goals for and against have bounced back to his pre decline days, but how much of that is him or linemates driven? Can he sustain it for the rest of his contract?
Interesting. I can see the Leafs being surprisingly willing to step up and take the risk. The "intangible"/ playoff value is through the roof- and even at just a 2C/LW level he changes he potentially changes the complexion of the team. I would see him at 3C with Nylander on one side- that's a matchup nightmare.

If he falls off cliff the buyout after next season is like 1.3m on a 100+ million cap- who cares.

That’s the spirit! Let’s make a deal.

Yep, if he is able to maintain the pace that he's had this season, the last year or 2 is a lot easier to handle with the increasing cap. And there might even be teams that want him for his cap hit at the end of his deal when his $ owed is a lot less.
