I know JT is the current captain, and it's "Matty's team" but when Tavares's contract is up for renewal, and regardless of if he signs again or not, if we have ROR under contract for 2 or 3 more years after that, he's gotta get the "C". Based on this series alone...

Reactions: JT AM da real deal
It would be great for us to get ROR resigned, so that his leadership and tenacious 2 way play rubs off on some of our younger guys coming up. We need to build that kind of culture in the room. Even in this series when the rest of the team wasn't skating, he was still trucking and making great plays at both ends.

A 1st, 2nd, and 4th round pick combined are "low"?

Actually, a 1st round pick 70% of the time nets you a good NHL player.

2017 NHL Entry Draft Picks at hockeydb.com
2016 NHL Entry Draft Picks at hockeydb.com

I believe a 2nd round picks about 50%...

a 4th round about 20%...

You do the math.

You're more likely to get two, not one.

{EDIT}

*****APPOXIMATELY*****

Holy crap relax, I put a chart up later on in the thread that shows close to those numbers

Bumping this, now that the Leafs season is settled.

The Leafs expended a heavy amount of draft capital for 1-2 expected NHL'ers long-term, so they could go on a Cup-run with ROR, Acciari...

Dubas gambled on immediate success which didn't materialize, and instead he just handed some to another team in the form of draft captial.

Was the risk worth the reward?

I believe it wasn't in the end, despite the guy on Twitter thinking otherwise. "JFresh" was it?

Should have known it would turn out to be more Foligno level. I should have done more homework. I didn't know so slow. I saw name O'Reilly and said oh that's a homerun.

Acciari was nice energy guy but not what we needed. You know it going to be 99% energy, 1% points from him. But this only matters because O'Reilly ended up being bad. Wasn't impressed with play against Tampa either, but he had some clutch points so never thought much about it and turned blind eye to overall bad play. Florida series made me realize he's actually not that good anymore.

I really enjoyed Ryan O'Reilly's tenure as a Leaf, and Acciari is a great soldier. Not sure what the future holds for either. Acciari is definitely affordable if he's interested in coming back. ROR, would like to see him stay and make more of an imprint on the program, but the money has to work.

In and of itself, the idea to bring in ROR was definitely solid. I unfortunately don't see where the long term fit exists though. He's likely to receive offers beyond being a team's 3C, and making him the 2C here just turns Tavares into an expensive winger for a team that already has one (or two) of those.

Ryan O'Reilly on his day at Oakdale, being a Maple Leaf and the disappointment of their second round exit - TSN.ca

Toronto Maple Leafs Forward Ryan O'Reilly joined the OverDrive guys earlier to discuss playing in the RBC Canadian Open Pro-Am, how he adjusted to playing in Toronto, how his family took the trade, what his summer plans are, what it meant to play for the Leafs, having an extra day during the Stanley Cup Final, how much pressure was relieved after winning round 1 and the feelings after losing to the Panthers.

I remember everyone here saying the trade will be worth it if we win a round. Because to most leaf fans, winning a round was their stanley cup.

But then they actually DID win a round, and those leaf fans looked around stunned and said "Wait a second... the road to a cup has only just STARTED?" And then they saw that losing in humiliating fashion in the 2nd round is in some ways even worse than losing a close fought 1st round.

No it's not, it's really REALLY not

Unsolicited he did say a couple of times "hopefully we get something done here"

Maybe that happened but I don’t remember a lot of people saying we’re all good with just winning a round. I think our expectations of the moves we made were to go deep. I think you can be okay with the price we paid mostly so if we can re-sign the players. Otherwise, it was a lot. That said, even though losing in round 2 sucked a lot, it was a necessary step taken by the group. Wasn’t THE goal, but it was a movement towards it

Doesn’t sound like a guy who’s rushing out the door to me. Hopefully matthews contract is realistic and they can resign him.

Acciari seems like an easy extension for Treliving.

ROR also seems like the type of player in Calgary he'd target - so I'd expect the Leafs to make a pitch for him too unless they prefer to save some extra space for a guy like Bertuzzi

Good trade. O’Reilly is the type of player that we need. I hope everything works out and they can get something done.
