Confirmed with Link: Leafs extend Rifai to a 2 year contract starting 2025-2026

Always nice to see an undrafted underdog put the time and work in and be rewarded. Whether or not he ends being of any use to the Leafs is TBD, but surely doesn't hurt to have the depth at least, especially with how much of this team will be FA by next summer. If he turns into another Benoit type that would be awesome.

He seems to be following the Justin Holl career path, albeit without the high draft pedigree.

I saw an Instagram graphic of this guy being signed and for a second thought it was Knies, had me confused af for a couple seconds

Good depth re-signing
 
He keeps the game simple and in front of him. Simple plays, takes body, chip the puck out. I like him.

Not sure he'll ever turn into anything, but no real downside. Locks him in in case he's able to break out.
 
Solid player, happy they re-signed him.

I don't think he is far off from Benoit, it is a nice depth signing, would be nice to see him get some games if there are injuries, but I don't expect to see much of him during this contract.

Assuming he is currently the first call-up and 2nd D to get put in after Timmins.

Totally forgot Timmins still with the team
I hope he gets some solid look this year. Like him as a player. There's some upside here

They are trading Matthews for a 7th so fans will stop complaining.

I think Timmins is an NHL player, he is less useful to us now because we addressed some of the puck movement issues we had last year, but, would still like him to get some playing time.

Would have been nice if Klingberg never got signed and they tried the better player out.

I think Rifai and him are the first replacements.

I can see Rifai going in if any of Benoit, McCabe, or Tanev get hurt, and then Timmins if any of Rielly, Liljegren, or OEL get hurt.

I’d be happy eith Timmons if it meant hhey traded Lilly simply to save money, neither are good D man, but Timmons hasn’t ran out of chances in my book…….

Liljegren has shown that he can be good, Timmins I don't think we've seen enough.

Timmins is better than Klingberg and they gave him a shot, not sure why it is so hard for Timmins to get an extended look.

What are we doing with the savings? Right now Liljegren is better than at least one of the other D we have.

I think Liljegren can be a top 4D or someone you can play as a #2 to compliment someone... he definitely has flaws and isn't there yet, but he's shown flashes.

Top 4D? His ceiling is a number 4 and I still don’t see it, he looked awful last playoffs…..

Plays 20 minutes a night, wins his minutes regardless of what metrics you use, had over 100 blocks and 100 hits in 54 games. That is a solid 4 already. Without Keefe coaching the team and over playing a cooked Brodie ( he looked horrible in the playoffs) he should have his best season of his career.
