Revisited pending the Cowen arbitration -

TO TOR: Stoner + Theodore

TO ANA: Leipsic + Marincin

Leafs take on Stoner for Theodore. Leipsic can slot in on the Ducks 3rd line right away. Marincin is effective in a 5-7 role rather than top 4 like in Toronto.

The Ducks' need to shed Stoner still isn't remotely big enough to warrant giving up a guy like Theodore to make it happen.

Manson can't be involved here. He's very good and very cheap which is what Anaheim needs. He's also their top pairing partner for Lindholm, so there's just no chance.

Otherwise I feel like JVR deal has been beaten the death, but this is the first I've seen with retained salary which is interesting because the leafs won't be contending this year or next. The Ducks have got to be willing to part with one of Theodore/Larsson/Montour, and the leafs have got to be calling about it. Ducks really don't have room to have 3 relatively blue-chip defensive prospects when they have a top-3 blueline in the NHL featuring many young players signed long-term.

The other interesting point is that the Ducks, for this year and likely this year alone, are becoming a momentary cap team.

I like the fit here, especially since you know enough to exclude Fowler/Lindholm from any discussions at this point. I'd drop the scraps and focus around:

JVR (x% retained) for Stoner+Theodore/Larsson/Montour.

If the x is 50, the ducks of course will be asked to add.

SO JVR needs to be retained and the leafs need to take on a cap dump as well to get a decent d prospect back?

no

Honestly kinda underselling on jvr a bit, and over value on our dmen.

We would likely have to throw in at least a 2nd to make Toronto even consider(w/o retention) and possibly a 1st if they do a little retention.

Theo/Larsson/Montour don't get jvr alone, and stoner is a - value(but in reality stoner prob the 2nd best dmen on the leafs behind rielly), but I'm guesing with that kind of move they arnt really tyring to compete this year.

oh c'mon you cant be serious

if the leafs wanted Stoner for free it would be done tomorrow. he is a #6-7dman getting paid like a #4. his inclusion helps the ducks out more than the leafs, thus an additional piece would need to be included.

better than gardiner and zaitsev...that made my day

Stoner wouldn`t be 2nd best defenseman on the Leafs obviously but people are perceiving him like he doesn`t belong in the NHL which is very wrong.
Then all these ridiculous proposals like in the OP just because some teams gave up sub-stud prospects to unload some (much larger and worse, may I add) contracts

Eh, what else is new?

What? Leipsic can slot on the Ducks 3rd line right away. Then why isn't he playing for the Leafs now?

Please folks, don't read scoring stats of AHL an think the top scorers in the AHL can and do step into the NHL. Read this year's scoring stats in the AHL and for the last 15 years. Half the leaders are career AHLers, whose game for whatever reason doesn't transfer into the NHL.

Leipsic is starting is 4th year as an AHLer, a usual indication that he not an NHLer.

And Marincin is NOT playing top 4 role in Toronto.

Leipsic has looked solid when he's been up with the leafs and is looking like one of the better forwards in the ahl atm. He'll be up with the leafs as early as TD imo. Plenty of players in the ahl are capable of playing in the nhl but are left there to develop..
