Let me be clear, I want Knies to stay but now that Leafs have the 1st overall a Knies trade becomes more possible because you can bring in Mckenna to replace, and very likely upgrade on him.

so with that in mind if you are going to do it I think something like this works

TO NJ

Knies+ maybe another piece

TO TORONTO

Mercer+Nemec+12th overall

again I don't want to see Knies traded, I think assuming they take Mckenna their top 6 is set

But if you can Walk out of the draft with Mckenna, Mercer, Nemec, and the 12th pick, I think you are a better team both now and in the future.

I also think Knies is a great player that NJ would love.

As a devils fan, I just don't want Knies that badly.

Based on what Montreal was apparently willing to give, I understand the cost. I just don't personally want to pay it.

12th overall= 2 late 1sts from MTL.

I'm not sure where Zharovsky=Nemec AND mercer comes from

Comparing to MTLs price, the cost doesn't line up.

12th overall=2 late 1sts

Then you're left with Nemec+Mercer vs Zharovsky

Package feels too rich for a winger the Devils don’t particularly need.

Nemec + Tsyplakov/Noesen (cap dump) + 12th overall is closer to what I would be willing to pay.

Even with that, I’m not entirely sure Knies is the answer for the Devils. I think those assets might be better used elsewhere if the Devils are trading them.

If Devils could somehow swing a Markstrom for Stolarz swap in this framework, I think it would be more enticing for NJ, but admittedly I don’t see why the Leafs would go for that.

I personally wouldn't do it unless it's Mercer

I believe it was reported that there was another prospect along with Zharovsky
A good rule of thumb is if a piece is reported as just "prospect" they are probably not particularly meaningful at all.

some C tier asset worth maybe a 3rd or a 4th that's tossed in.

Or maybe they are worth a second. Who knows. Trade fell through, so it doesn't really matter.

The price is too high for Knies for my liking regardless.

Nemec
Noesen
Markstrom (33% retained)
Daws
12th overall pick

for

Knies
Stolarz
Ersson

I'm down. Other Leafs fans may or may not be. I believe in Nemec long-term, and the 12th overall pick could be just as good as Knies, or better... if you pick the right kid, and if you develop him properly.

I also believe in Hildeby. Hildeby Markstrom Daws Aktyamov should IMO be good enough goaltending to get into the playoffs, IF that's what Chayka is trying to do. Hildeby is a stud.

Just not enough for me. Maybe if jerseys pick was top 10?

There are 13 kids at the top of this draft that are considered by some to be clearly above the rest of the draft, and I tend to agree with that from the little I know.

We won't get McKenna Stenberg Malhotra or any of the top 4 D kids, but out of the remaining 6, two will fall to us.

C/W Viggo Bjorck (1st line potential?)
RD Daxon Rudolph (top pair PPQB potential?)
C Tynan Lawrence (elite shutdown 2C?)
W Wyatt Cullen (1st line potential?)
W Ethan Belchetz (6 foot 5 power fwd)
LD Malte Gustafsson (6 foot 4 skates well)

I'll take one of these kids (Chayka gets 2 to choose from) and Nemec for Knies. Nemec is slightly younger but RHD not a winger. This kid is gonna be only 18 years old. McKenna will be 18. Yes please. Let's get younger if there's no cup coming until the 2030s.

Only two I’d be interested in there would be Bjorck and Cullen and I’m pretty sure both will be gone in the top 10. Actually I’m on the record as really wanting Bjorck. I think after Mckenna he’s going to be the best of the bunch. But you’d need to be in the 6-8 range for him.

Like if there is a trade out there that includes either the 4th or 5th pick plus a top pair dman, that’s something I would consider.

...Pickford just won WHL Defenseman of the Year, WHL Player of the Year & CHL Defenseman of the Year...he's risen to A+ prospect level...
No he hasn’t. He’s 20 already playing against children. He is a good prospect don’t get me wrong but he isn’t some stud and if you think he is then all the power to you. Most would disagree though. Probably top 4 upside.

I think the top 8 will include (not in this order) McKenna Stenberg Malhotra Bjorck at forward and then Reid Carels Verhoeff Smits at defense.

Florida picking at 9 wouldn't be looking at Cullen IMO. Probably Lawrence or Belchetz or Malte Gustafsson.

Nashville picking at 10 will probably be looking at Lawrence or Rudolph or Malte Gustafsson. They MIGHT go with Cullen, but they desperately need C and RD. Lawrence is a VERY good C prospect and Rudolph is a VERY good RD prospect. They'd have to be EXTREMELY impressed with Cullen to take a winger IMO.

St Louis Blues picking at 11 would be looking at any of the guys available, but like Nashville, they have holes at C and RD. Lawrence or Rudolph would be EXTREMELY tempting if either one is still available.

So... yeah. Cullen could be there at 12 realistically. Especially if one of Malte Gustafsson or Belchetz go in the top 11, which isn't a guarantee, but is likely-ish.

Grabbing Simon Nemec and Wyatt Cullen for Matthew Knies would certainly be intruguing.

Devils should do this all day. Mercer is actually harder for me to part with than Nemec. He's a great utility middle 6 guy who can play in all situations, up and down the lineup.
