Well it's obvious the leafs need to fix there backend. I like gardine(he's a 3 but can be traded), rielly(top pair), and zaitsev(top pair potential). Besides them everyone else has been bad to terrible. Here are a couple of options to fix the backhand.

Trade 1. To Toronto: Olli Maata

To Pittsburgh: JVR

Trade 2. To Toronto: Jacob Trouba

To Winnipeg: Jake Gardiner, plus leafs 2017 2nd, plus sharks 2017 2nd

Trade 3. To Toronto: Brett Pesce and 2017/2018 2nd

To Carolina: JVR

Trade 4: To Toronto: Cam fowler, clayton stoner, sens 2017 2nd(most likely theres) and ducks 2017 3rd round pick

To ducks: JVR

What do you guys think? Fair deals or not

It's not obvious of when they need to fix it by..let's get Liljegren instead of giving up assets.

Leafs overall team defense needs improvement. Once they get that sorted out the defensemen picture will clear up. Until then stand pat.

Agreed. Need to let the young guys play and work out the kinks. No better teaching tool than having a guy blow by you for a goal or good chance a few times. Our kids seem to be getting instilled with a strong sense of pride, so dont want to look bad.

Average age of a D man on Toronto is 25.57 years old. Not exactly a seasoned crew out there. The vets they do have should be bottom pairing guys at best in Polak and Hunwick on a contending team.

If it was up to me, I wouldn't mind moving to get a slightly older guy who is a real work horse vet. Kind of like how Crosby had some real old vets to learn from. They were well past their primes but helped mold him.

Maybe aim for a guy like Bieksa who you could probably get for almost nothing, if not some extra pieces for taking the cap hit (two years) or

Francois Beauchemin who is still playing like a solid #4, who could help teach your Reilly/Gardiner/Marincin how to play a smarter two-way game. Would cost a decent ammount as he is still playing well and Col has had a good rebound so far.

Mark Streit. Could be another great teacher for a Reilly/Gardiner who are still learning the ins and outs of being offensively gifted. Streit at one point was one of the best Offensive minded blue liners, and can still play. He is another guy you may be able to get on the cheap because of his cap hit.

Make it Vatanen instead of Fowler and I'd do it. That would give you a ready made pair of Stoner-Vatanen that has proven to play well together.

It's unlikely in the extreme that Vatanen is the one to be traded 4 games into his new contract. Especially given that they made his signing announcement the highlight of the season ticket holder event, and that Sami has been the one they trot out to all the fan events (despite his abysmal fashion choices lol).

As far as the Leafs defense, do nothing.

Teach the kids and get the system down to a T. Take on a veteran with a bad contract later in the year for futures and slot him into the lineup and Bob's your uncle.

Kid is a kid and Babcock has had him working on his defensive game for a year now. He's currently in the wringer and we'll see what comes out the other side, but he has all the tools to improve and is in a very supportive environment.

I like JVR but I'd rather the Pens keep Maatta and let him get healthy. I think they're better off with him than without him in the long run.

Zaitsev is the real deal, it's just too bad that brain cramp Babcock has to pair him with Hunwick. I would pair Gardiner with Zaitsev and Carrick with Hunwick. But it is absolutely awful that Babcock just makes lines like a moron. He is the most idiotic coach out there.
