I've thrown out fantasy ideas with 3 similarly equal lines.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Paccioretty - Tavares - marner
McMann - SchennLevelCenter - Nylander

Give them equal playing time and don't bother sitting 3 4th. liners on the bench that you give 7-8 sympathy minutes playing time to.

I would agree that it seems to make less and less sense for us to dress more than 2 4th liners. Just make them great penalty killers and force feed them PK minutes. I don’t care if they see the ice at all 5 on 5

And yep, keep first line in tact, and balance the 2a 2b lines with a big forward trade.

Berube has always struck me as a guy who's easily 'terrified'.

Terrified of getting Babcock'd out of town.

Clearly, Craig knows who the real bosses are in the Leafs organization, and it's not guys named Brad or Brendan.

Yes and they need more depth scoring and I think Matthews is better without Marner. Of the big 4 right now Marner is the guy that doesn’t have the play style that succeeds in the playoffs.
Nor a contract. Paying him what he wants is certainly debatable but it isn’t so easy to immediately replace him with a second line centre, top pairing defenseman or 20 goal scorers at $4M as some posters are suggesting. Those type of players either re-sign with their team or there’s a ton competition in signing them as UFAs and Toronto and Canada are no longer considered top free agent destinations. I just hope Leafs management waits until after the playoffs to make a decision. It seems ludicrous that they would wait this long and then sign him before then but if it’s still Shanahan making the decisions it wouldn’t surprise me. Another flame out in the playoffs should make it pretty clear (if it isn’t already) that paying three star forwards all that money will never succeed against deeper teams. On the other hand, a deep playoff run and a rapidly rising salary cap may lead them to believe that it can work. I really don’t care as long as they are a cup contender.

The only thing about this is that the best shooters/scorers on the team are Matthews, Nylander, McMann and Knies and I'd want Mitch playing with at least one of them.

But this top 9 I'd be okay with, at least to give a try.

Berube has enough talent to ice 3 solid lines that can produce yet for some reason (actually one I just addressed above) he refuses to.

Had to laugh when I saw the lines before game with Berube stacking the 2nd line because he's terrified of dropping one the Big Guys to the 3rd line. So lets put Willie on the left even though he's chasing a Rocket (irrelevant but still) and has been a RW (and rarely a C) his entire life ...

In any case, good, solid win.

Is it just me or do they generally just play more disciplined, tighter and focused when Stolarz is in net vs. anyone else? Or he's just that good it looks that way? Whatever it is, to me he's the easy starter come playoff time.
Stolarz is bigger and seems more consistent to me but both goalies give them good enough goaltending to steal a series.

Nylander Tavares Marner line was outplayed by Seattle.

33 million dollar line and it's outplayed against a lousy team.

Matthews Knies Domi
xg 0.54 xga 0.09
3 high danger chances for, 0 against
Nylander Tavares Marner
Xg 0.17, xga 0.31 against
0 high danger goals for, 3 against
Once they got up 2-0 they pretty much put it in neutral. Not surprising. Save some energy for the game Saturday against the Canucks who will be a much stiffer test. A win is a win.

I hate having Marner and Nylander on the same line, just not enough puck for both of them.
Nylander is one of those players that seems to be best on his own line with lesser players. I think lots of star players are like that, because, as you noted the more touches they get and the more they carry the puck the better they play. Matthews seems to be like that too. He looks great carrying the puck into the zone vs Calgary...but we dont see him do that very much when he's with Marner.

Vancouver won't be a much different test with the way they are playing, especially with Hughes injured. The Leafs will win that one.

Clearly and yet he still took the job.

Nothing he can do about the playoffs in February.
You'd have to admit, for example, breaking down last nights first goal to diminish his role in it, most would consider a little unfounded(that's putting it politely)

Apparently some can't tell him and Marner apart.
Yeah, and a few jumped on for the missed breakaways as well.

But it's a feeling they all carry at the moment, possibly more so for Marner because of his contract status. But there are some who still aren't sold on Nylander either and think he's a rather soft Euro player. Even Matthews gets caught in it, as well.

Clearly and yet he still took the job.

I remember reading the leafs weren’t even his first choice. He was hoping to return to the Flyers, but they kept Torts. he lives in Philadelphia and has close ties to the organization so it makes sense

So our 100 point forward is much less than a point a game in the playoffs? Thank you for proving my point

Classic goal post moving

The playoffs are a whole different ballgame as we know from past Leaf playoff failures but I wouldn’t worry about playing Ottawa in a 7 game series. Ultimately talent, experience and goaltending will win out over a playoff series which is nothing like a regular season game where a team like Ottawa will be jacked to play the Leafs while the opposite isn’t true. The previous four times the Leafs met the Senators in the playoffs, the Sens were the better regular season team but the Leafs still came away victorious. The Panthers and Tampa provide a bigger challenge because of their playoff experience and goaltending than an Ottawa team that will be happy to just get in.
The Sens have elite goaltending in ullmark and better D than the Leafs. I guess we just have to hope Stolarz is good to go and that Matthews finds his game and starts scoring again.

Vancouver won't be a much different test with the way they are playing, especially with Hughes injured. The Leafs will win that one.
Leafs record in Vancouver is complete dogshit. 26-49-11 all time, and only 2 wins in the post-lockout era. There is a higher chance of them beating the 2002 Red Wings in their prime than there is them winning a game in Vancouver.

Lemme guess. Now agent Dregar puts him on the rising value list for notable trade deadline dark horses (sources tell me).

I hate dreger.
Marner wont entertain a trade because he wants to stay.
The leafs want to start talks with Marner but he won’t talk.

So maybe he doesn’t want to stay?
