I look at it differently . We don’t need Matthews to go deep in the playoffs. Many many teams have had way more success without Matthews. What we need is the value that his price point would bring if properly spent.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. MacKinnon would be very comparable to Matthews. So is Kuch, Point etc.

The only difference is they are signed for much cheaper. In Mack's case it was because he was a 60 point player even he signed his last deal. Kuch took less, not to mention Tampa heavily gamed the cap to make their players fit in.

Take away Matthews and this teams offense is much worse. Do two 6 mil players make this team better than Matthews? I'm not so sure. But maybe
