Post-Game Talk: Leafs Book Their Tickets for Game 7 [MOD WARNING in OP]

The problems run deep. Too much to say. But the continuing problem that never gets solved is what I call "the Top 6 / Bottom 6 metaphor" problem. Once you accept that distinction, you are blind to many other problems that follow. That term implies that the the third line is quasi equivalent to the 4th line, which is useless. The 3rd line should be a gentle drop-off from the 2nd line, not a proxy of the 4th line. We need a Top 9.

We know what happened: there isn't enough money to have a strong third line centre. Going back to when Kadri was there -- think about the 3 centres down the middle they had. But they need wingers who can score reliably. It IS the missing piece of the puzzle. Why is this the problem? Because in the playoffs it is too easy to concentrate your defensive play on the first two lines only, because no one else is a threat.

They won't win with Matthews and Marner. Ryan O'Rielly, apparently a straight up guy, said "there are two guys on the Leafs who will never win the cup." It was a major comment. It could be Marner and Matthews or Marner and Nylander. but I think it is Marner and Matthews. Matthews is not a leader, not a captain. He is distant, he doesn't communicate. He may be injured but the accuracy of his shot, his trademark, is gone. Marner is not primarily a goal scorer.

I would much rather have 6 guys making 7 million each than 4 making over 10,000, or whatever they make...
Is that true? Not calling you a liar, I definitely believe you, I'm just playing devil's advocate.

Matthews is very obviously one of those guys if the quote is true.

An interesting part of the 0-30pp stat is that technically that is a whole game.

The Leafs on the powerplay after allowing those 2 short handed goals are DOWN TWO GOALS meaning that they are LOSING a WHOLE GAME on the powerplay.

Matthews over the last 15 playoff games has 2 goals or an 11 goal pace for a 70 goal scorer.
Marner has 3 goals in the last 17 playoff games and 13 points, a 14 goal/60 point pace for a 25-30g/100p guy.
Nylander has 6 goals/12 points in his last 14 games, the smallest dropoff at 35 goal/70 point pace from his 40goal/85 point pace.

It's not even a top 6 issue. It's a specific Matthews Marner issue.

True, Nylander was great.

The few who keep simping for this core at this point are embarrassing. Blaming depth players like Lorentz lmao, maybe if the top six could engage themselves physically like Lorentz they'd have more goals.

You can blame everyone... it's stupid not to, no one performed.

The argument is that it is not only the top six.

Another question, which lines are helping the team win the most?

Marners Playoff Career by game since the start of round 1 vs Boston in 2018

• Game 1s: 5 G and 7 A in 10 games

• Game 2s: 4 G and 8 A in 10 games

• Game 3s: 0 G and 11 A in 10 games

• Game 4s: 2 G and 11 A in 10 games

• Game 5s: 0 G and 5 A in 10 games

• Game 6s: 1 G and 1 A in 7 games

• Game 7s: 0 G and 2 A in 5 games

The rest of this series, is pretty much career defining, and future defining.

These Leafs, and Marner are the opposite of clutch performers.

Goals are 15-12 in the series (removing two ENGs from last night) in favour of the Leafs.

It's a lot tighter than most want to admit.

Leafs need to find a way to end this tomorrow night.
How anyone can say it's not tight is beyond me. All I can say is that it's a good thing we managed to win 2 out of the 3 OT games.

We need to protect Matthew Knies before he soaks up the 'suck' from the rest of these losers. Make that kid Captain, look at how he sat down that little bitch Pinto.

Should Robertson go back in for Patches based on these stats?

Our challenge has consistently been in games we can close out series. Yes, our guys put up plenty of points, and goals early in the series... I posted Marner's stats just above, but it's closing it out. This group has lost 13 out of 14 games, where they could have closed out a series. You count on your best players, to be their best when it counts, and they haven't been at any point in their careers. The first three games were great, they all performed very well.... but it's when we have to close out that it counts... Time to exorcise those demons, or they are who they are.

The Leafs have not scored a power-play goal in a close-out game since April 25, 2018 1-31

I don't understand what pressure these losers are facing. Pressure is a single parent trying to feed their kid. These losers play a kids game for a living. Go out there loose and have fun for f*** sakes... Losers complain about trying their best, winners go home and f*** the prom queen.

Playing Marner and Matthews together all season is idiotic. Berube didn't even try a different combo for 10-15 games straight. What is the regular season for?
Was genuinely very disappointed by that. We even saw how Marner could carry a line for long stretches without Matthews this season, and even that wasn't enough to keep different combos. Now it's too late and you're married to the combo until they finally separate for good this summer.

We've seen Marner and Matthews have elite play time and again. I don't think this is a pairing issue, as much as these guys just ghost when it counts most. Changing lines isn't going to make any difference. I get we are all disappointed, but this is the wrong straw to grasp onto.

last 2 games have made me long for being outshot badly by opponents, extended dzone time is basically the only way we create rush chances. in soccer parlance I would rather surrender possession and look to counter at this stage

I'm afraid that it's already too late. Knies is an Arizona guy, he hangs out with Matthews during summer time a lot.

So we consolidate the choke onto one line to create a super choker line?

Whether it's their teams, or the people around them, these guys ALWAYS seem aware of the noise around them.

The 'pressure' comes from them totally knowing what is being said about them, and how it cripples them.

And Willy floating outside the blue line not JT, of course. I like it. Needs great goaltending though.
