Proposal: Leafs Big contract move

The Leafs are going to be in CAP trouble for the next few years. They need to resign Rielly ($7-8 mil per year), Campbell ($2.5-3 mil), and fill out a roster that looks like more than spare parts outside the top 6 (could even say top 4) and top 3 D. The Leafs have also been trading away almost every draft pick we own.

The Leafs could use an upgrade on Def, restock picks and retool the lineup so it is not just stop the Top 4.

The Leafs should trade one of the big 3 contracts Matthews, Marner, or Tavares. In my opinion Tavares would be the one leaving the core group. This would give the Leafs the opportunity to spread the money out and the opportunity to dangle the "C" for Matthews to re-sign longer with a lower CAP hit once the current contract is up in 23-24.

Assuming Tavares waivers his no move.

To Toronto:
Miles Wood
Damon Severson
1st

To NJ:
John Tavares
Ilya Mikheyev

Or

To Toronto:
Neal Pionk
Cole Perfetti

To Jets:
John Tavares

i've been saying for a while we have to move JT and i don't give a damn he has a nmc since most players will waive once it's known they're no longer wanted , where he'll waive too is the bigger issue

also i don't really care what the return is as long as dumps aren't coming back

Many of us Islander fans think part of the reason JT left is his wife/then fiancee did not like the NY Metro area and wanted to practice her profession in Canada. Newark, New Jersey is even a worse location than Long Island to a person who thinks that.

JT's not going anywhere, for better or worse.

If there's one to move, it's Marner.

But I do think the Leafs "cap issues" are overblown. People have said this for two offseasons in a row and they've managed the cap fine. Next year Kessel's salary retention comes off, so that should pay for some of Rielly's raise (or replacement). They're probably forced to trade Kerfoot to re-sign Campbell, but that's pretty much all the cap maneuvering they'll need to do. It's not that difficult really.

JT is the least moveable piece . He would be closer to a cap dump and the return would be underwhelming .

0% chance he waves.

Nylander , Marner , Matthews are the only 3 moveable players with their contracts

JT will be a leaf until his contract expires

Marner to buffalo makes alot of sense , buffalos got the prospect / picks and cap space . Eichel gets a true number 1 winger to play with.

Tavares won't waive to come here and, despite Nico's beauty of a deal, I don't see the value in acquiring another top center. Especially with a contract that rich.

Given the Devils' barren RHD pipeline, I'd much rather extend Severson and roll with him and Dougie at RHD for the foreseeable future.

Just find 7 forwards each year making under a million to create a competitive playoff team. Easy peasy.

I might be missing some sarcasm here...

But if you are serious ... uh... what are you talking about?

They managed the cap just fine last year? The team had no depth at all and the signings that were brought in all flopped with the exception of Zach Bogosian. Joe Thornton was slow as hell and way over the hill. Jimmy Vesey was a total dud who was waived and left the organization. Travis Boyd did nothing and then got waived. Mikko Lehtonen clearly wasn't an NHL calibre player and got traded. These signings were terrible, did nothing to improve the team and they are all now out of the organization and Dubas went out and signed a bunch of other AHLers to league minimum contracts to plug the holes.

The team is in cap hell and has absolutely no depth.

Interesting hypothetical. And, although I don't agree, a case can absolutely be made that Toronto needs to trade one of their big 4.

But it all crumbles down because (1) Tavares had an NMC, and (2) Dubas is absolutely going to give another chance the current core and current roster.

Like it or not, both those points aren't changing.

Not worth discussing. He isn't leaving Toronto. He is a big part of the team as well and shouldn't be floated out in proposals.

JT is playing out his contract. Who exactly is the Leafs 2C if he's gone? Please don't say Nylander or Kerfoot.

Jets biggest:

Strengths - Wingers & centres depth.

Weakness - defence

Biggest needs at the start of the summer - defence and more ELC coming up to replace vets.

Let’s trade away our best defencmen last year and our best forward prospect for another centre.

Jets hard pass, Jets have no need for a very expensive aging JT. PLD had multi injuries last year and big trade at only 22 yrs old, fully expect him to return to form next season…….we don’t want a 11 million centre.
