Exactly what are you expecting from a free asset who plays 3rd-4th line minutes and who averages 15+ goals a year? All star?
What you wrote makes no sense, but I'd accept him not being actively bad at like 3/4 of what constitutes hockey. I'm actually pretty forgiving rating players and mistakes.

He's like if you took an AHL guy in a video game and edited his stats and amidst all the 3s and 4s out of 10 gave him a "9" in offensive awareness. He's forever in a good position to score and that's to his credit, but that he does like nothing else is to his detriment.

I think AT BEST he's a neutral player, and that's really frustrating.

Our PP was somewhere in the 20's when Pionk was getting regular time. Now it's 12th.

I think that's more that Pionk was murdering it than it is Shattenkirk being impressive though.
Probably running a little hot in that sample, but also probably some effect of Shattenkirk being in certain positions/making certain passes that maybe aren't directly leading to goals but give an improved structure that lets everybody else be a bit better.

Doesn't every team have multiple "neutral" type players? Its true what he said.....we got him for nothing! Replacing one of the draft picks that we easily gave away for many years.
He scores 15-20 whether its 2nd, 3rd or 4th lines. He is what he is. Every team needs players like that. Not like he makes 4 million. Neutral, like u said. Not expensive.

I don’t think that’s what offensive awareness is

Because his one area is probably the hardest one to have be really good, and is the most impactful. If he was even average at like, strength and making and receiving passes you have a real player.

He's like the winger version of Pionk except without all the fun hip checks and random rushes. Effective despite all evidence to the contrary.

That is true, but their Norris candidate looked like a cross between Tony D and Pionk on that first goal.
Lots of Norris candidates make shit plays

Like, all the time

Not every great defenseman is Nick Lidstrom, most of them are turnover machines

I think for him and his role it is. We have 2 and a half seasons of evidence that he's in a spot to get an inordinate amount of really good scoring chances despite not being particularly strong, fast, or "smart". Past the point of it being him running hot, it's something he's actively good at.
