Leafs at the Halfway point of the Season

How does Columbus only have 33 giveaways?

No way is that possible.

Because you have to have possession of the puck in order to give it away? :dunno:

And I realize now I had the wrong one sorted, that was for home only.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20132ALLSAAAll&sort=giveaways&viewName=realTimeStats

is the correct one, Leafs are still the worst, Columbus is still the best.

If you look at it though, the leafs have 173 giveaways at home while only 88 on the road even though we have played 2 more games on the road. This is a stat that is very subjective and changes vastly by each arena.

Giveaways are a weird stat.

1. They're not necessarily a negative. when you look at the league leaders in giveaways you see mostly top players and teams. giveaways happen when you have the puck more.

2. Unlike easy to identify rtss stats like hits and blocks, gvs and tks are much harder to define and much more subjective.

You would also think if there is a giveaway, there is a takeaway to go with it. But if you add up all the giveaways and takeaways, there are many more giveaways.

Probably due to things such as dumping the puck in to get a change sometimes being counted as a giveaway even though nobody really took the puck away. The other team would just pick it up off of the end boards.

Is there even a clear definition of what constitutes a giveaway?

If you have the puck and don't score, couldn't it always be considered a giveaway depending on how narrowly or broadly someone wants to define it?

i.e. A shot on goal that is saved and held could be considered a giveaway

I'm sure there's a definition but i don't know it, and i can't see any definition that could be clear enough.

This team has much better fundamentals than past early hot starts.

The game against Boston was pretty good, outside of a few glaring giveaway plays by Holzer and Phaneuf. That happens against a great team.

Leafs score a power play goal, and it probably goes into OT at least.

sorry had to do this.
