Guy couldn't even get into the HF conversation with the four guys selected ahead of him. Now he's going to be the first defenseman from the 2017 draft to play an NHL game. He's also on PP1 at today's practice.

what an unreal opportunity for him now with Krug out

He have played almost 3 seasons against men already but didn’t expect him to adjust so well in NA game.

6 finnish players was drafted in 1st round of 2017 draft. 5 are starting their season with NHL team and arguably most hyped one is going to minors but when season starts every finnish 1st round prospects in 2017 draft have played in NHL after 1 full season. Not too shabby.

There are also 4 drafted in the next two rounds: Salo, Kotkansalo, Rasanen and Laaksonen. All I think have at least bottom pair potential, with Laaksonen in particular staring to break that late rounder mold.

Somebody needs to find out ASAP what they had in the water in Finland 20 years ago.

From the few games I have seen him play he has been very steady, rarely makes mistakes. The guy no one talked about last year. Nice to hear other teams commentators rave about him.

Love it. I mean, I hate that the bruins continue to succeed with their scouting and development, but I hope he vindicates my opinion that he's a better player than Erik Brännström.

You might want to wait to see if he actually succeeds at the NHL level before taunting the other fanbases. Valimaki made the Flames as well.

I'm not taunting anyone. It's a fact that he will be the first defenseman drafted in 2017 to play a game. If anything, it's fans of other fanbases who wouldn't even entertain the idea that Vaak was in the same class of the guys picked immediately before him who should be apologizing. I'm not saying he's better yet, but it was a farce that he wasn't in the conversation and that's pretty obvious now (and watching him play). He's good.

You realize it's not a race about who gets to the NHL first, right? Urho always had good tools to work with and a high floor. The question with him is what he tops out as. Guys like Brannstrom and Liljegren quite obviously have more skill in their game and thus a higher ceiling, but obviously carries more risk (which often means more time in the minors to round out their games) as well. It's a risk vs reward thing and in the draft a lot of people, especially on here, prefer high risk and high reward over low risk and low/medium reward.

Alright, we will see.

Completely disagree.

I like Vaakanainen, thought he would need a year in the AHL to adjust to the North American game. He may still be sent down when Krug returns in a few weeks, either way he’s a promising young prospect (and still WJC eligible this year).

Yeah i thought hed be ok but not this good, i was wrong not including him with Valimaki and others in that tear

A bump is in order.

Is improving in his each game and it has shown in increased ice time,
2 game point streak in the NHL.

His 2nd point in this season is a beaut.

cuts the pass attempt, mid air, great first pass forwards to Hall,
who finishes a 2 on 1 pass to Pastrnak. - great play

For a Finn, 6 foot 2 IS big/tall, he is not Canadian.
Average Finn is probably tallest with Swedes if we include biggest hockey nations.

According to eliteprospects he is 6’1 185cm which is slightly less than NHL average 186cm. Big isn’t right word to describe his stature especially when he is pretty skinny for a hockey player.
