LD Ryan O’Rourke (2020, 39th, MIN)

Does anyone else like him better than the other two highly touted shutdown guys out of the CHL this season, Guhle and Schneider?

I think O’Rourke plays with more hockey sense, a quieter type of game. He’s not as athletic, but I think he has more hockey talent than these guys, and being the captain of a CHL team as a 17 year old speaks to his intangibles.

I can see why Guhle and Schneider are ranked higher as their floors are Brandon Carlo like, which isn't sexy in fantasy pools but in real life NHL very valuable. that being said I think O'Rouke is flying under the radar a bit and will most likely be the best value pick of the 3 guys.

He’s likely a late 1st round pick and comparable to AVs - Timmins. Dropped into the 2nd round and D+1 dominated with more opportunities showed he was a steal. He would be in the NHL, except the concussion derailed his progress

ROR is so similar, there are no standout qualities, but all his skills and you get a well rounded and good player. I expect a bottom Top 4 floor.

This was the comparable I thought of as well in terms of where he was drafted and his emergence in D+1 although Timmins had more opportunity in his draft year to show his overall skillset.

He will be selected by either: NYR, COL, LVK, STL or ANA.
I'd be ok if Colorado picks him. There's nothing about him that's not to like in his game.

He might only realistically be on our "3rd" pairing behind Byram and Girard, but Bednar typically rolls with 3 pairs, and so having 3 very strong D pairings while filling that '3rd' pairing role with a quality ELC Dman would be really valuable.

Byram ----- Makar
Girard ----- Timmins
O'Rourke -- Helleson

That said, I'd be less enamoured with picking O'Rourke if a high-ranked forward is available at that pick (eg. Reichel).

I don't really see him being a developmental guy at all, unless if by that you mean that he fills out a bit, which is likely. Has that all important tool for a Dman, a mind. Also has decent size, and appears to have intangibles out the wazoo. Only thing that will keep him from being picked in the teens is a lack of any standout physical quality and points. GM's are still looking for Dmen with who can defend. Even better if they are smart, and can skate. If ROR really works on his skating then he will have a long career.

Not everyone on a team can be a smallish puck rusher who scores 50+ points per year, or a guy who skates like the wind but has rocks for brains.

Yeah everything you said and there's just so little risk with the guy. He might be my surest bet to be picked in the first round of any player not in the top 10 cause some team is just gonna take the sure thing instead of gambling.

I hope he is around at #39 for my team to pick. Hope,he is lost amongst the Wallinders, Grans, Barron's and the like.

The Wild have enough PMD prospects, and need Dmen prospects that can play strong D.

He isn't necessarily sexy and he does need to continue to work on his skating, but I really do think he is the third best defensemen in this draft class.

Oh, I was grouping into tiers. Didn't mean to give the impression that i was ranking players within tiers. I'm a Schneider fan, so i differ from you there, but I can easily see one of the big, fast Swedish or Finnish Dmen surpassing him in 5 years or so...I just don't know which one.

Really like this pick for Minnesota. Wasn’t thrilled with either of their first two picks, but this one I thought was excellent.

Happy with the pick. Thought they might go with Gunler, but there is obviously some doubts about his game.

They can take their time with him, though it's possible that Soucy will get taken in the Seattle ED, and they will need him sooner rather than later. He can pick up a lot watching Brodin and Suter ahead of him.

Welp I was wrong! Bright future for him anyways!

I think that he is a far more sure thing than Marat to make the NHL, but MN needs C's. LHD, not so much, but MN can take their time with ROR and insert him into the lineup in 2-3 years from now when Suter is near the end, and Brodin is nearing 30yo. Hopefully he can pack on some pounds and fill out that 6'2" frame. MN has some really skilled young Dmen, but size is one thing that they lack.
