Big Swedish defenseman. Arguably the top Swedish d born 2008. Plays a two-way game and stands out with his combination of size+mobility.

Currently representing Sweden at the World U17 Challenge and is the leading d logging big minutes. Reminds me quite a bit of fellow Swedes Philip Broberg and Simon Edvinsson when they were his age.

Looks like a potential first rounder if he continues making huge strides.

Brother: Predators draftee Viggo Gustafsson

Impressive CV and traits for a 16 year-old. Always enjoy when watchers/scouts point out the defenseman to watch, as it always seems easy game to “sort by points” for forwards but I feel like advanced scouting like this for young defensemen to watch takes actual eyes on player - at least more so than forwards.

This seems like a prospect and thread which could blow up by the time this kid is draft eligible!

His brother seems underrated also. I doubt many outside of Nashville or Sweden realize he was a 3rd round pick and is already taking SHL shifts as a guy who just turned 18 as one of the youngest players of the 2024 draft.

He's going to get a lot more buzz as we get closer to the 2026 draft. I think very likely a first rounder, and could be an early first rounder. I definitely see the Broberg and Edvinsson comparisons. Looked more like Edvinsson to me than Broberg. Not as much as the flashy pure puck rushing of Broberg, but more of the two-way beast of Ed.

I didn't know whether I like him or Bjorck more, which is a good thing because they were two of the standouts to me at the WHC17, but I think those two and Stenberg will compete for first drafted Swede in 2026 and I don't see 3 top 10 picks out of those three as impossible.

The only point of my prospect hobby is that the Sharks are in a multi year rebuild that depends heavily on draft success. We need D, all kinds of them, into the pipeline, and we're not likely picking one of the likely top 3 (Reid Verhoeff Smits).

I haven't been enamored with Rudolph or Carels, which may be a blind spot, but time to look at this tall monster in the SHL.

This first watch from @Prospect Shifts (ty ty as always) was pretty encouraging.

He's not screaming top 5 or 10 pick, but may be underrated as a mid first round option. He has size and length, smooth mobility with an impressive top speed, and decent instincts on when to use all of these. His go to is a board pin with the opponent wrapped up. Sometimes he wins a solid battle, other times you can tell he made a good choice to be physical but he's still 18 and gets bodied. A few very good DZ breakups, saved a goal, some nice snuffing out of plays.

In DZ puck movement and transition game, he's got snappy passes but not always the right decision, but often the obvious one executed decently well. The few times he used his length and speed to carry, he looked very good.

In the OZ, he didn't present himself as much of a threat but he did seal the boards decently well with good instinct and timing, he made a few clean passes when called upon, and he got a quick slapshot through to the tip for a primary assist.

The reason he's not higher is because he's not very flashy. He's not offensively sparkly, his defense is very to the point but also not popping like e.g. Smits blowing up Matthews and Draisatl in the Olympics. However for an 18yo doing this in the SHL - serious kudos.

Seems like a profile for a boring pick in the first round that turns into a solid middle pair PK guy who just does his job and is underrated on many winning teams. Could also just die in the graveyard of long tall skating D without enough jam or skill to carve a really great role, maybe he bounces around as a bottom pair or fringe guy at the floor.

Would want to see more games to strengthen my read on whether the gaffes are a consistent problem or just youth and inexperience in a men's league, and look for more flashes. As a drafting org I'd want to evaluate his intelligence and ability to learn and build his understanding of the game on both sides of the puck. And maybe project if he becomes a physical monster or if I think he's going to be a twig.

He’s already pretty much a physical monster. I’m a huge fan. Would pick him closer to 10 than 20.

On the upside case that could be, and if drafting today I'd agree. He's very young for his class. The next 3 months will be fun and critical to watch. I get more of a Mukhamadullin vibe on the physicality currently (long, tall, smooth, but not beast yet) but my mind could be changed depending on more watches and combine results.

McKeen's has him at 9 in their recent update, one ahead of Rudolph at 10. EP likes him "and he could put it all together to become a top-pairing guy" but still likes him in the mid-teens. Anyone watched anything more recent than Feb?

Looks like he led SWE in ice time at 22:00 and team leading +4 with 0 points and 2 shots in game 1 of WJC, but missed game 2 with a minor knee injury from blocking a shot.

I didn't get a chance to watch but the swedes on the WJC team Sweden thread seem to think he's a big part of whether this team is a contender this year or not. Still have a good feeling about this kid like a few others here (notably Jux and a few other sharks fans).

Why am I unable to find any highlights from the 1st Sweden u18 game on YouTube?

I can see a sort of Edvinsson light. Smaller, slightly worse skating and offense. Makes hard passes, making his wingers suffer wrist arthritis before their 20th birthday.

At the U20 level he shows more offensive instinct. Pushing up along the boards and keeping the play going. He looks for shooting opportunities, often shooting a very hard shot wide of the net.

Defensivly he is a beast. Hits, good gap control, mean streak.

I like him, I can see why some scouts have him just outside the top 10.

I remember in Kenny Jonsson's first couple of seasons with the Isles people were down on him because he didn't show a ton of offense. But over time that part of his game kept increasing, and you realized that he was just focusing on learning to play defense in the NHL early on.

Saw my location did you? 😁 I see Kenny about town sometimes. But yeah it's not uncommon for new players in a league to play it safe for awhile.

Gustafsson has the only SWE goal, leading TOI and is -3 in an 8-1 shellacking vs USA (still underway).

Can't find a video of the goal, but according to Twitter it was a seeing eye wrister from the point on PP2, post and in.

It was a hard wrister on PP2, caught the goalies glove but still made it in.
