You may be recalling 39 year old Boyle. Prime Boyle was extremely solid defensively. Obviously had limitations because of his size but he was comfortably average and played very tough minutes. You don't play on the Canadian Olympic team if you aren't solid defensively.

Boyle was very good defensively up through 2013. He did fall off in his last season and a half with us, but he was ancient at that point.

if he were to reach his peak potential, i feel like he's more likely to end up like a jared spurgeon than a dan boyle. boyle was more flashy offensively to me. spurgeon just does everything right.
