LD Luca Cagnoni (2023, 123rd, SJS)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

He is a great pick for where he was taken, lots of offensive upside, but SJ fans should remain cautiouslly optimistic. For every Fox or Hutson, there are hundreds of smaller ultra talented smaller D who dont make it. Perunovich, Ty Smith, A. Boqvist come to mind but there are many many more

perunovich and Boqvist were nothing special offensively at any point in their development. Ty Smith, that one you’re right on, he’s got three really good seasons in the WHL.

Beyond that, they’re all 24-26.

This kid is cracking the NHL as a 4th round pick and he’s barely 20.

His NHLe in his D+2 season is the same as Fox’s D+3.

That’s notable.

Perunovich was dominant offensively in his 1st season in the AHL before getting injured ( more than a point per game and 20 pts in his first 12 games ). How does that compare to cagnoni?

Boqvist barely played in the AHL..

Perunovich wasn’t a PPG player until his D+3 season, when he was still in college. A year older than Cagnoni is now.

He has some decent AHL numbers, in less than 40 GP across two years.

Maybe he’s an AHL all star.

But there’s nothing in his body of work to suggest he’s some massive untapped talent. He’s an undersized D who has never played 60 games in a pro season by age 26. Probably because he’s not elusive enough to overcome being 175 lbs.

As for Boqvist - he has one good season where he was playing for the Knights as an import. Every other season of his career, he’s an offensive non-entity.

This kid is a 4th round pick, and he’s in the NHL at 20.

I don’t care if the sharks are rebuilding - that almost never happens.

Fundamentally, how many NHL defensemen have played a decent amount of games (say ~300), and are Cagoni's height or under?

Krug, Spurgeon, Lebda...Mike O'Connell back in the day.

Bunch of young 22 and under really high potential offensive guys on the California teams right now:

Clarke (LAK)
Cagnoni (SJS)
Luneau (ana)
Zellweger (ana)

Mintyukov too but I see him more as an allowed around type.
Ducks def trying to make Minty into a 2way guy. Luneau could prob use some NHL time... but man hes stuck behind a lot of guys.

As for Cog... hes always been a player that caught my eye when ive seen him (AHL/Rookie touranment/preseason etc).... would be a very nice hit for for the sharks. Glad to see him get his shot in the NHL... hes basically tore up every league hes been in. Didn’t know he got his call up hopefully he’s playing vs Anaheim later this month.
