LD Lane Hutson - Montreal Canadiens, NHL (2022, 62nd, MTL) - Part 2

Montreal has had a disastrous start to the season.

Five points (not including the last Montreal's win) is a lot in this context.

Anaheim's current defense doesn't include most of the players I listed (only Mintyukov and Zellweger).

I don't see this group (the both + Hinds, Luneau, Warren, Dionicio, Drysdale if he wasn't gone) becoming the best defense in the league. I'm taking Hutson over this group without hesitation.

With Hutson instead them, Anaheim would have scored a lot more points. Again tonight, Hutson's presence added two points to Montreal's tally.

What I was trying to say is that I think Ducks has a pretty promising group of young Ds, even if none matches Lane Hutsons historic numbers. Ducks and every other team in the NHL should want Lane Hutson and prefer him to lots of their own young guys or prospects.

I sure would want him with the Pens. And I would also very much want some of Ducks group of young Ds in Pittsburgh, especially Minty, Zellweger and LaCombe.

Now lets root for Hutson to get Calder!!

His success reminds me of the debate between Montreal and Anaheim for best prospects a year ago.

Anaheim fans fantasized about Drysdale, Zellweger, Dionicio, Mintyukov, Luneau, Warren, and Hinds forming the best defense prospect in the league... Hutson alone is worth more than all of those guys.

Hutson is an elite defenseman in his rookie season, while I'm still waiting for an elite defense from Anaheim after seven years away from the playoffs.
Lacombe left out on purpose?

Hutson just keeps on producing. I think he wins the Calder but I also think this could be a career high and we will look back at Michkov being easily the better player.
It's possible, happened before but hopefully it's not the case. He's an exciting player to watch so NHL would be better if he keeps getting better.

Of the listed prospects who were in the discussion at the time, I find four of them to be of a negative NHL standard : Luneau is perhaps interesting, Zellweger is at best average for the NHL, and Mintyukov is good.

If you extend that to older players drafted since then, it makes for an interesting group with Helleson, Lacombe, Mintyukov, Zellweger, and Solberg. But it lacks a def1 that would change the team's level.

I don't think you quite understand the level of obsession he has with the game. Maybe an injury happens but I highly doubt he regresses. He has to be barred from the ice on his off days or he uses literally every single one to practice for hours. Since resting during the 4 Nations he has a genuine argument as the best all-around defenseman in the NHL due to both having 18 points in 15 games and a 2.25 5 on 5 GA/60. He's been an all-around nightmare to play against.

Career high? LOL. Hutson train has just started rolling. He only has 5 goals after all, and he's working hard every practice on improving it. Demidov is coming next season so the PP should be even better.

Michkov will probably be better in the long run. But easily better? That's not a given.

I like how some random posters from other teams have conceded that Hutson will more than likely win the Calder but that he's some sort of "one hit wonder" and that he won't be able hit these offensive numbers again. It's like they're trying to forget Lane Hutson's stats before this year.

In the last 4 seasons including this season in the NHL, the 2 in the NCAA and his draft year when he played on the USNTDP, these are his stat totals:

240 GP- 51 Goals- 205 assists- 256 Points

Career high? Uhh nah man

Michkov could have a similar career path as Yakupov. A good rookie season then bust.

Impressive to watch Hutson and hear about him here. My point is more that he has a lot of secondary assist obviously. I think before last night Michkov and Hutson had about the same primary assists. Right now Hutson has the same assists as Makar. He’s getting a fair amount of luck which is fine and great for him. He’s on a historic run and should win the Calder. But I think this will be looked at as Michkov last to Hutson!?!?, when we look back. I think Michkov is a little below Kucherov. I do not think Hutson is Lidstrom or Makar.

When everything is said and done there's a good chance both Lidstrom and Makar will be considered top 5 dmen ever. Hutson does not need to be Makar to be considered a better player than Michkov lol. What is going on in here.

I don't think Hutson is getting a major amount of luck, he's got an all situations PDO of 100.4 which is pretty much average.

I don't really think it's ridiculous to think Hutson has more development in him either. He's been improving constantly throughout the year (Aside from some fatigue in late January and before the 4 Nations), and has been downright dominant at both ends of the ice since the 4 Nations break.

I love Michkov too and agree that he has Kucherov upside, but I don't see any reason to discount Hutson reaching that level, especially when his league leading slot passes start going to guys like Demidov instead of guys like Armia.

My inital expectation before the season started was for Lane Hutson to develop as an elite PP specialist. By around the 10 games mark, I thought this was ridiculous, the kid is way too good, I was way off, he has the potential to become a top pair defenseman. Now 60 more games later, my opinion is changing again, I think a top pair is a bit disrespectful I think he can become a Franchise/Norris defender and one of the NHL best defender like an Adam Fox or a Quinn Hughes. How he has developed over the year, his constant movement, his intelligence, his dedication to get better and his ability to create offense out of nothing is quite remarkable. Habs got lucky selecting him.
