Plus minus is a tough stat to use. For example Hutson has been on the ice for 8 empty net goals allowed.

Not saying he is great defensively or anything like that but the Habs are -14 in goals differential this year.

Context is important. He has a stud shut down d partner and not someone who's infamous for being a defensive liability ... right?

lets just call it like it is, he generates a ton of offense, his defense is downright terrible. He's still worth a 62nd pick all day and I think he'll find a way to at least be below average defensively.
That's not what it is though.

He's not awful offensively, his speed and stick work makes him a lot better than people credit him for. He's aggressive though, very much so. That gets him deep in the zone lots which means he's often a chaser in his own zone.

His defensive metrics are absolutely terrible.

ahhhh good old plus/minus argument for people

if a player has a GOOD +/-, rival fans say "plus/minus doesnt matter and its a useless stat"... but if a player has a AWFUL +/-, those same rival fans use that to attempt to trash talk the player

He’s well advanced then where Quinn Hughes at the same time . Defense is toughest position to adjust and some coach’s think it takes 200-300 games to really get it .

But to be fair, he was directly responsible for 3-4 of those goals. Coughing the puck in the neutral zone to Matthews on the 5th goal, or getting outmuscled by Nylander on goal 3, or caught with a deep pinch, and going for the wrong guy on the McMann goal etc....

He's a young player, reminds me of young Subban almost with worse physical tools and better puck handling. Flashy, amazing edge work, with just awful defensive awareness. He'll be fine, it takes years to figure out the defensive warts.

Saying that the McMann goal is Hutson fault is simply bad faith and he didn't go for the wrong guy at all. The Nylander goal is because of Anderson actually, not really because of Hutson. Only the Matthews goal was because of him and even than, Montembault was really weak on that play. He didn't have a great game at all for his standard. In fact, he had a terrible game but those +/- aren't telling the whole story.

I love PK but he is far more skilled and has more IQ than Subban ever did. Pk was obviously much bigger and had a large physical advantage as well as a rocket snapshot, but I would honestly take Hutsons IQ over PK'shot power and selection any day.

He had a pretty bad game, but 3-4 is a stretch. The nylander one was maybe a slight misread but that's against a superstar player who does that a lot - is everyone else in the NHL bad when a superstar does something great? No. Not to mention the fact that Anderson shot it into a shinpad, maybe he was slightly out of position but hockey is a sport of gambles and when shit goes the other way sometimes you look bad.

Mcmann goal wasn't his fault soles either, he just happened to be the one who looks bad if you only watch 3 seconds and not how it develops

Oh i absolutely agree he has moments of games where he is awful defensively or gets pushed around... most offensive dmen have that issue, especially young ones like him.
