Livanavage is one to watch in the NCAA for years to come as a potential NCAA UFA signing.

Sure, not a great likelihood that he becomes a consistent NHLer, but he's progressed up levels to the point where you'd want to keep an eye on him.

Was at the North Dakota Miami Friday game in Oxford a few hours ago. Thoughts on Livanavage:

Livanavage isn't looking quite as dynamic as he was last year, but his ability to walk the blueline on the PP and run the unit are still impressive. Skates extremely well, passing is pretty solid. Really nice pass to Sacha Boisvert on the GWG for UND with 23 seconds left. I expect he will have NCAA UFA interest once he decides to turn pro, but he might be more of a AAAA type since he's not especially big and his defensive ability isn't great. We'll see how Livanavage develops though.

NHL teams would rather bet on some bad hockey player who has size or something compared to a B+ small player. It is what it is. Same type of situation as Galvas last year.

Like I said almost a year ago, players like this are worthless even if they hit.

Livanavage's upside is, like, Erik Brannstrom or something. The actual Erik Brannstrom at age 24 coming off two seasons as an NHL regular was totally worthless, cleared waivers, etc.

Troy Stecher, Erik Gustafsson. And so on.

There's a difference between drafting guys that play NHL games and drafting guys that generate value. NHL teams are trying to generate value and this is why they draft big C and D because even if the odds of that player playing NHL games are lower, the actual value created if they do is so much higher,

There is no upside to drafting tiny defenders with non-elite talent. The absolute best-case scenario is that you've sunk a draft pick and years of developmental time into an asset that's still basically worthless.

There is a value to having a deep system where you have 10 defensemen that can take an NHL shift at any given time compared to 6. Past the second or third round you probably aren’t getting a player that generates NHL value. There’s probably some minor value derived from what I said, having organizational depth.

It’s hard to agree with this logic. Great post.
