I don't think it's the most ideal pass, to be honest. I'd prefer a little further back so Christiansen can skate into it.
Yeah but if he does that, who knows if he still turns and fires. It wasnt the perfect play, but it was a laser, tape to tape pass from one side of the zone to the other.

Mateychuk's having a very strong camp and preseason. It's going to be tough to send him down. While I expect they do end up sending him to Cleveland to get top pairing minutes, in terms of impact and ability I think he's certainly higher than 5th on the Jackets' defenseman depth chart.

He'll have a permanent role once Provorov is dumped. Likely at deadline but should be sooner if Columbus GM has a brain.

Currently 10th overall in AHL scoring, as a defenseman, also as a rookie. He's too good for AHL, as was obvious in training camp. Trade away at least one dman on main roster and make room for this kid. Do it now.

I'm not sure he's too good for the AHL. Cleveland has an excellent PP and he's a big part of it. 3-5-8 on the man advantage puts him tied for 2nd in the AHL right now. He's very good, yet it would probably be best to see how he continues to round out his game for a bit yet especially since Columbus is already paying for Werenski to be their top PP guy. It's a great sign that Mateychuk is racking up the points, just would it be in his interest to rush him?

You're not rushing someone who is ready right now. Plus it's easy to shelter minutes in NHL. Werenski is more of a 5 on 5 offensive dman and he isn't good enough to impact decisions on other players. 6 pp pts in 17 games plus rest of his career shows he isn't that guy on PP.

He ain't ready. Great player at 3-on-3, very good at running a PP, probably will soon start to produce at 5-on-5. I don't see him supplanting the established guy in Columbus nor that he's so great at ES that he should be going up a level.

Make room by making a trade. Most decent offensively gifted players are good 3 on 3. That's completely irrelevant.

IMO its the correct move having him in the AHL all season. ZERO reason at all trying to rush him in the NHL... Let him do his thing all year there and then assess the situation next season.

Hes a real impressive prospect so let him develop properly

That's crazy production for the AHL. I wonder if CBJ plans to use him and Werenski on the PP at the same time?
I doubt it, they offer a different role but it's just been 1 D on PP1. A lot of these coaches also act like playing on the PP is earned or a privilege (Torts) which I think is stupid, it's a skill and the best players for any given role should be out in that situation. I don't mind Werenski on PP1 this year compared to the past because the entire PP dynamic is different. Mateychuk on the 2nd unit could make a ton of sense though

He’s a really talented kid and Columbus is handling his development perfectly. Not pushing him, allowing it to develop pretty naturally. He could probably use another 30-40 games to help him defensively, but they’re gonna give him some games in the NHL, to see where he’s at. If he struggles any, they’ll send him back down for sure.

He’s still gonna make his rookie mistakes the first 100 games but they won’t be foundational type mistakes. Just being a little too aggressive, or getting used to the speed, etc. The type of mistakes Clarke and Edvinsson still make but not like Nemec or Jiricek we’re making, over and over again, because frankly, they just weren’t ready yet.

The game comes to Mataechyuk very naturally, on both sides of the ice. Since drafted, they’ve let him dominate Juniors and be a Top AHL dman before letting him make his debut. Watch how much more seemless his transition is over Jiricek.

Good bet he’s a pillar on their blue line by this time next season. It’s gonna make letting Provorov walk, if that’s what they choose to do, much easier.

He a big reason they were so willing to let Jiricek go too.
