LD Cole Hutson - Boston Univ., NCAA (2024, 43rd, WSH)

TBH, Hutson had an up and down first semester. Some very good games and a few laced with turnovers. His best game was his last of the semester, a 2-goal, 2-assist effort in a 4-2 win over UMass. Following the game, he did a mea culpa on camera about not being “good enough for this team.” Trying too hard to be Lane? Probably.

Since then, he’s been lights out, leading the WJC in scoring and playing at a high level in the past three games. He's tied for fourth in scoring among D1 defensemen--tops for freshmen--with fewer games than anyone else in the top 20. Averaging 1.0 ppg. Only Buuim (1.2) is higher.

We can only wish Lane was able to get 5 assists and be +7 vs Germany

Still a really good WJC by a defenceman. Way better than Lane had the year before who was 1 year extra after draft. Where Lane had 0 G 6 A in 7 games. He also had one game where his stats got pumped up with 3 assists in a 10-2 win.

Cole have stepped up recently and if he continues with that he might come close to Lane's production in both players first year at BU. Both have shown great promise in juniors and we now know that Lane's game have translated to the NHL level.

Based on so far in their junior careers they are quite close and hopefully Cole are also able to take the step up to the NHL. The safe bet is Lane will be better as we already know he is an NHL player, but Cole have the potential to be just as good or slightly better if everything goes right in his development. No need to have arguements over whos best now.

Based on juniors same age they are quite close. Lane is an NHL player now. Cole have to establish himself there before saying he will be better or just as good as his brother.

Lane was used very, very poorly in the WJC

Both can be true actually
How was he used poorly? Which defensemen would you have preferred to play the tough minutes matched up against top forwards on the other team?

He was the best LHD on his team. Seems pretty simple that you’d want him playing the biggest minutes and in all situations. He tilted the ice more often than not, and his team would have the puck. That’s better defense than some big guy who is bad at hockey.
