More likely the other way around. Caps already have a very good team with a lot of young players on it and more are on the way with Leonard, Cristall, Parascak, Protas and Hutson on the way. Also guys like Sikora and Mateiko had very good WJC. Surprisingly deep prospect pool for the Caps.
By the time Cole is NHL ready, Both Ovechkin and Carlson should be retired. It's pretty much impossible to replace the impact these 2 players have on the Caps and I would say a post Datsuyk Red Wing outlook is more likely for the Caps then them staying competitive. But who knows what some great UFA signing could do to that team.

The thing is, they aren’t really succeeding the last two years majorly because of those two players.

Of course they are two of their best players right now (maybe the two best), but it seems to me like whatever you think the team amounts to is bigger than the contributions of a few players. It seems a lot like a team that is reliant on having a great coach that has built a great system.

Cole Hutson 11 points/+11/only 2 PIM/1st place team finish

Axel Sandin Pellika 10 points/+8/6 PIM/4th place team finish

ASP named Best Defenseman of Tournament by IIHF. Hutson was robbed.

And that's with Hutson not getting as many prime opportunities as ASP either, since Buium was the PP1 QB

He might be ready next season.

Would Hutson have so many points on a worse team? The US was a lot better than Sweden.
Would he have as many points on Kazakhstan? No, but keep in mind he was on the second US PP unit.

So to answer your question, I don’t think it’s a fluke when you are the first defenseman to lead the tournament outright in points and you weren’t even playing PP1.

Does it help to play for the best team? Sure, but not everything was necessarily in his favor towards what he accomplished and he still did it.

I have no horse in this race. ASP looks further along in his development to me. He had a strong tourney for sure. He and Hutson racked up stats against weaker opponents, because they're that good and they could. Hutson is playing above his draft position already. Looks like a super confident kid and no doubt will productive in the show with Washington. I would marinate him in college, until he can't grow his game there any more.

Caps have handled the departure of Backstrom, Oshie and Kuznetsov well so I dont see the reason why the shouldnt be able to do so now with a lot of talent coming up. They of course dont have a new Ovi, but Even with his impressive season so far he isnt like 20 year Ovi anymore and while his goalscoring will be hard to replace a guy like Leonard coming up can replace some of that and he also brings a solid game overall. The same with Carlsen who is still very good he isnt in his prime anymore and its not impossible to replace. Chychrun might already be the best defenceman on the Caps.

Probably similar to his brother, does one more year of college and then signs end of year to burn a year of ELC.

For sure

But Habs are exiting their rebuild and are loaded with young and promising players

Plus, Hutson is a God in Montréal
Even as a Sabres' fan, it's infectious hearing the Bell Centre crowd get pumped up when Lane is working his magic.

Oh, right. Cole's thread. Ya, he's good too.

Not as flashy nor as edges-happy as his brother, but almost as elusive and has a more accurate shot. Is it fair to think he plays a more composed, perhaps more cerebral, game?

Don't want to sound critical of Lane. Big fan of his as well. Nice to see that he's shut his doubters up, mostly.

I think Cole is the more measured version of Lane. He was bigger at the time of being drafted, more physical, and better defensively. Doesn’t have the same degree of offense, but few do and he’s not that far off.

Cole might be as good as Lane, but with a different set of skills
I'd take both on the Habs, easy
If there's a third Hutson bro, send him to Montréal too! :P

There are two others. The oldest of the Hutson’s, Quinn, plays at BU. Think he’ll be a UDFA signing after this season or next. He’s a future pro. Not a lock like Lane or Cole to play in the NHL, but has a chance. Obviously the Habs and Caps probably have a general leg up on the competition.

The youngest, Lars, is a 2027 draft eligible I believe and people say he’s the worst of the four, but Cole was thought to be nowhere near as good as Lane years back and he kept improving, so maybe Lars will also improve as he gets older.

Hutson was excellent. He played far better than I expected him to after seeing a few shaky games at BU this year.
