Read that his coach expects him back at school.

Hope not, he would probably jump ship next year. Other teams will be easier competition

When I watched BU games he was facing the other teams top lines. So I have a hard time seeing how he was buried behind McCavoy/Fabbro.

He doesn't play a lot on the PP. wouldn't expect him to put up a lot of points. But he has NHL written all over him.

Was a key part of BU's PP as a freshman. Expect Hickey and Fabbro to be the first PP pair next year.

Yeah I would worry if he goes back for his senior year. He's from
Leduc (Edmonton suburb)

I don't see him as a big point producer at the next level anyway so it doesn't bother me

We need cheap bottom pairing guys with upside for the next 3-5 years.

?? I'm confused. Just because he isn't going to be a big points guy doesn't mean I'm not a fan. On the contrary I think we could be looking at a Hamonic/Brodin type,

I'm really high on Brandon Hickey. To me he's the perfect fit for Brodie/Andersson/Kylington/Fox.

Imo the Flames top 3 prospects are Andersson, Hickey and Jankowski.

If he refused to sign in Calgary, he's more likely a compensatory 4th in '19 for AZ.

Guys like Hickey are looking for an opportunity to play in the NHL right away. The weaker the team, the more likely he is to sign.

It's not like Calgary has any defensive depth.

If he was looking for a shot to play, the road was as open in Calgary as anywhere.

The Flames will have about 13 million dollars after re-signing the RFA's and only need to address 3 things. A middle six RW, a #4 and #5 D-man.

It's already kind of understood that Stone will be back, and he won't be more than 3.5-4.25. Leaves 9 or so mil to get a #5 and a RW. Not overly difficult.

The Flames top 3 spots are locked. They will sign a number 4 in the offseason. So Hickey would be competing for a 5/6 spot with other guys like Anderson, Wotherspoon, Kulak.

The Flames don't have the best depth, but there are a lot of teams with worse. Hickey is from Alberta. There's no other obvious reason he wouldn't sign - and he wouldn't.

I'm kind of surprised that calgary traded him assuming he would not sign there, since his family is based in Leduc (just south of edmonton). Best to him in Arizona or where ever he ends up signing.

Wrong. The Flames have 4 pro prospects ahead of Hickey on the depth chart (Kulak, who might be lost to Vegas, Andersson, Kylington & Wotherspoon) and another college player who is already looking much better than Hickey ever did (Fox).

And then there is the fact that Wideman, Engelland, Smid and Treliving's propensity to look for overpriced stopgaps like Stone (to say nothing of Grossmann) have been blocking those prospects' road to the NHL for years.

Hickey was definitely not going to make the NHL any time soon in Calgary and that is probably part of the reason he decided to wait for free agency.

Please, Calgary doesn't play prospects unless they're top 10 picks or Johnny Hockey.

We prefer to play veterans like Bartkowski, Grossmann and Wideman who are complete trash over guys who are young and make valid mistakes because they're young, not mistakes made by guys who have been in the league a while and are terrible.

We'll see if he ends up signing in Arizona or not, but I had high hopes for him.

I think he's pretty meh as a prospect. Doesn't really have much puck skills. I do think he could be an okay bottom pairing.

Every team has prospects like Kulak, Andersson, Kylington, and Wotherspoon.

If he didn't sign in Calgary because he didn't think he could get past them, Hickey should just sign in Europe now.

Calgary's top 3 defenders are good. The rest of their defensive depth is not.

It's not like Hickey is trying to break into the Ducks or Predators roster.

Who knows the reason why he didn't want to sign in Calgary, but I think the "Too much competition" angle is a little far fetched.

Your opinion of those prospects is not really relevant to the point I was making, which is that they are closer to making the NHL than Hickey and there is a limited number of spots (1 or 2) available for them next season as per Treliving himself.

Any Flames fan will tell you that Andersson and Kulak are by far the most likely D prospects to make the Flames next year, with Kylington at 3. If Hickey had signed with the Flames this summer and exceeded expectations in Stockton, he might have displaced Wotherspoon on the depth chart and/or competed with Kylington if Kylington stagnated, but he wouldn't have played in the NHL and Fox would have leapfrogged him the moment he turned pro. Your assertion that not being a better D prospect than Rasmus Andersson means Hickey should go play in Europe doesn't change the fact he's not a better D prospect than Rasmus Andersson.

Opportunities to make the NHL were definitely scarce for Hickey in Calgary. You seem resolved to believe otherwise for some reason, but maybe you should defer to people with more knowledge of the situation in this case.
