Defenseman with the BU terriers Drafted out of the AJHL. Looks to be having a solid year so far, he supposedly is known for his smooth skating and IQ. Anybody know much more about him? He's playing on the same team as Eichel so maybe somebody has got a few looks.

All I remember prior to the draft was that the Panthers were very interested. They wanted to scout him however everytime he was injured. And he was an oilers fan.

I saw him on Tuesday at the BU Vs. Harvard game, hes was paired with Doyle Somebry a stay at home D man, Hickey is pretty much what is bold and on top of that a pretty creative offensively as well. He had a pretty nifty toe drag move that led to a clean shot. He reminds me a little of Jack Johnson, a player who is solid in all aspects, but will get caught out of position once in a while trying to make a big play. Hes also not very physical and needs to gain more weight, listed at 176 but def closer to 190.

id say ceiling Jack Johnson and floor is maybe Matt Hunwick, but I like what Hickey and Eichel has brought to BU

Do you watch BU a lot? If so, looking for some info on Somerby. PM me.

Calgary has a solid prospect on their hands with Hickey. I've watched him ~20 times this year and he consistently impresses me as a freshman. Very good skater with decent size to go with it and solid offensive instincts. Equally solid in his own zone.

He's a kid with potential and definitely turned heads at Flames development camp. Was surprised he went so late in the draft. It's going to come down to how he progresses at BU. A solid development program alongside an amazingly talented player like Eichel sounds like the place to be.

It's getting crazy seeing all these good young college players get overlooked in their draft year and then skyrocket with their play. Gostisbehere, Gaudreau, Reilly, Hickey, etc.

To play in college, you can't have played in the CHL. Players in lower leagues (AJHL for Hickey) are always given less attention because teams don't have confidence in how their game can translate. I'm not sure they're necessarily overlooked; it's just that the quality of competition makes projecting harder. The earlier the round, the more safe the projection.

To add, NCAA teams have a much lighter game schedule so they can focus on player development - practice + training.

going to be interesting to see how he and the rest of that team fare without eichel. flames could really use another brodie type homerun.

I was very impressed with Hickey during the Frozen Four. He definitely is similar to Brodie, but has a much better shot. I'd also argue he is better defensively and positionally than TJ was at that age.

It will be interesting to see how BU does without Eichel next season. They're a very young team overall, so even without Jack they have the potential to have a very strong year.

Doubtful. Hockey Canada rarely invites NCAA players.

Jankowski got an invite to the training camp. Forgot which other NCAA player got the invite that same camp. It happens.

I bet that Hickey will get the invite. After his first season in the NCAA, I think it is safe to say that he has turned a lot of heads.

Came in here to bump this up. Did anyone watch him much this season at BU? I know the offensive numbers aren't there but everything I've heard he's just a solid all around player and has loads of talent and could possibly become a Top 4 option at the NHL. Does look like he may need to develop his offensive game at the pro level but he's also slightly burried on the depth chart under McAvoy and Fabbro.

Is he gonna sign with Calgary or head back with McAvoy and likely Fabbro moving on? Would love any report anyone who saw him this season could give. Thanks in advance!

When I watched BU games he was facing the other teams top lines. So I have a hard time seeing how he was buried behind McCavoy/Fabbro.

He doesn't play a lot on the PP. wouldn't expect him to put up a lot of points. But he has NHL written all over him.

When I said burried I meant in terms of his use/deployment as an offensive weapon from the backend. You nailed with with he doesn't play a lot on the PP I think. The tournament games I watched featured Somerby - McAvoy / Hickey - Fabbro pairings I believe

Saw a tweet, believe from a local reporter quoting Treliving stating they were pushing hard to get Hickey signed.

I am a Bruins fan living in Boston and I have seen a bunch of Hickey over the years as I have folllowed Bruins prospects playing in Hockey East. Hickey is a fine prospect for Calgary. He's a versatile player with good wheels, decision making and decent physicality. He isn't elite in any department but he is well rounded. I would say a two way defender with a slight preference for the defensive side of the rink.

Appreciate the insight. Sounds like something we really need in our system. Kylington and Andersson are our two most highly thought of D prospects and while both boast a decent transition game their strengths are most obvious on the offensive zone. Having a couple defense first types would be awesome.
