I don’t know about “very underrated”, most have him in the short list for the five or six guys competing for spots 3-5. What I can’t stand is people suggesting he’s only getting hyped up because it’s a shallow class of defensemen.

Although the guy in the other thread violently espousing “ARE YOU KIDDING ME HE’S NOWHERE NEAR Q. HUGHES” was a good laugh. At this point, Byram over Hughes every time.

That’s fair. I guess I’m getting too caught up with the guys saying he’s easily behind guys like Q. Hughes and Dobson. One poster even said Juolevi was better in his draft year which is just insanity to me. Byram is on an entirely different tier than a guy like Juolevi at the same age.

I would take him at 3.

I probably would as well.I’m not sold on Dach, wouldn’t risk a Russian player at 3,Cozens I’d certainly consider but Bryan would be such a talent on the back end that he would be hard to pass up.
I’d ask myself how often does a potentiall 1D come available to your team, and the answer is almost never, especially when you’re on the upside of your rebuild and expecting to start climbing the standings going forward.

And that is the crux of it with Byram, and why I'm unsure between him and Kakko. I know Kakko has been amazing this season but if both hit their ceiling I'm taking Byram no question. Yes we just drafted Quinn Hughes, but I don't think QH has the all around 1D ceiling that Byram has. Hughes looks like he could be elite offensively but I don't know that he'll ever be an all situations minute munching #1. On the other hand I think Byram has that potential.

There is not really a debate to be had on that point, that person is having a laugh. Offensively, Byram's on a completely different level.

Vancouver is a defensive team whose top scorer has 64 points. Despite that, Byram is still producing at a PPG clip and could end up leading his team in goals, assists, points, +/-, and PIMs. He also has 5 OT goals and 2 other game winners. Also a later birthday.

Compare that to Juolevi's draft year in London, where his team had three 100 point scorers and he put up 42 in 57.

Byram's having an epic season, even for a D+2 player. For a draft eligible with a strong two-way game, it's almost unheard of. He runs the show when he is on the ice

I don’t think Hughes can be a minute munching #1 at his size, guys his size just can’t really do it at the NHL level. Let’s say he is 5’10 like he’s listed at, if you look around the NHL the guys his size aren’t #1 D. It’s not say he can’t be the exception to the rule but I’m not counting on or even expecting him to be anything more than a 2nd pairing guy, that’s going to get loads of ice time on the PP and put up points, he’ll get his minutes at the end of the day but they won’t be in all situations.

Could Byram jump into #3 in the draft?

I think most of his competition for number 3 plays in the same league as him so itll be interesting to see what NHL teams think come draft time. If Detroit picks third as of right now I would be happy with that pick. I'm not sure how much team need comes into these picks like some people would think in here, but for some teams that might be the deal breaker for where hes picked. If LA picks third they could pick the forward over the D, but a team like Detroit would prefer D I'm sure. I just dont know how much teams consider that in the NHL

Just another dominant performance by Byram. Scored his 5th OT winner which was his 24th goal of the year and added 2 assists. His 1st one was a really nice stretch pass and also had a lot of scoring chances, 7 shots officially but was 10ish imo

I really don’t think anyone was a “much better” skater than Byram. And I disagree with the idea that he’s better at all; I think it’s quite similar between the two.

I think there have been better skating d prospects over the last few years, including Provorov. Heiskanen and Hughes would be others.

I like the rest of his game, just don’t think his skating as high end as I’d ideally want personally.

Agree about his skating except Provorov was also a very average skater...

Everything that I have heard or read about Byram touts his skating as one of his strengths.

And you watched how much of Provorov in Brandon?

There's no issue with Byram's skating. He'll add some speed along with strength/balance/fast twitch gains

Did not say there was an “issue”.

I remember Provorov making some end to end rushes and looking very agile during international tournaments.

I could be remembering wrong, take it easy.

He's not very fast. He'll probably get faster as he adds muscle, but I would be surprised if he's ever considered a high-end skater when it comes to NHL standards.

When people are questioning his skating, it sounds like it is more an issue of top-end speed and/or acceleration. Is this correct? I just want to be precise, because skating involves a number of different components to me (edge work, lateral agility, balance/strength on skates).
