Yes the Avs pick 4th and I have 0 faith that they will pick Byram if he is still available.
Which is why I hope that he goes 3rd leaving Turcotte (hopefully) to the Avs...

Hopefully both of them keep lighting up the score board and performing well in the CHL playoffs/U18s (while the rest of them disappoints) in order to make passing on them incredibly hard for a stubborn GM who picked Kaut over Smith just because he felt like picking a winger....

If youre interested in drafting for need I would think the Avs would be taking a firward to get some depth on that second line. Outside of hoping Jost pans out they dont have much behind their big 3. A Turcotte/Cozens/Podkolzon could be scary coming at you after that top line

I'd take him if I were Colorado. Great D can often make average forwards look above average, whereas average D can often make great forwards look average. All about that transition game baby.

He's a bigger need for Chicago though.

I thought it was in this thread but I can't find it....

Someone posted the highest scoring draft eligible d men to come out of the WHL and Byram was climbing that list.

Anyone able to provide?

He's tied with Jim Benning for the 14th best ever season in points by a draft eligible defender in the WHL. And he's tied with Doug Bodger, Murray Duval and Scott Neidermeyer for the 8th best goal scoring season for a draft eligible WHL defender.

As of right now he is currently in 11th in points for best playoffs by a draft eligible WHL defender, and 6th in goals scored in the playoffs by a draft eligible defender all time.

I'm not sure Kaut over Smith had to do with Sakic wanting a winger...

Really like Byram at 3/4 in the draft, but wondering if he can take it to even another level and solidify his position in that range.

2nd period over.

Byram is a really interesting player, he can basically do everything well, solid skater, gritty, He is extremely involved in the play.
Rushed the puck up countless times, reliable in the defensive zone.

Might not do anything spectacular, but obvious NHL skill set, ideal for how the game is played.

Pretty much how I see him. Just an all around good defencemen at every aspect of the game. Even though he's getting a lot of love he's still pretty underrated. You have to really watch him a few times to get a vibe of just what he does both with and away from the puck to appreciate how much his game has grown. Watching the giants in the playoffs on stream does not do his game justice. When he's on the ice he controls every aspect of the game.

I'm not sure what next level he can take it to at this point. Already finished as one of the top 15 best seasons by a draft eligible defencemen ever in the WHL. During a much lower scoring era then most of the other top guys. Already among the top 5 best playoffs by a draft eligible WHL defencemen of all time and he's not even done yet. And I mean this kid is the engine on that Giants team.

It’s too bad that he can’t spend next season in the AHL. I would be surprised to not see Turcotte/Byram go 3 & 4 at this point. Just depends on which one the Blackhawks like more.

Which is why I wish the NHL would allow an exemption for 1st round, or even just Top 10 picks from the CHL to go straight to the AHL. But obviously they'd never go for it. It sucks because there's so many players who are clearly left with nothing to prove in junior yet not ready for the NHL.

They really need to. I get the whole money piece behind it, but there is really nothing left for players like Byram to prove in the WHL.

For a guy who looks to potentially go 3rd/4th OA at the draft there is very little buzz about him.
What's the deal?

NHL playoffs as well as U18 happening at the same time..

The time for him to shine and everyone in here to fall in love with him is if he makes it to the Memorial Cup.

Also I still don't see the Avs picking him at #4 overall unfortunately. Avs will force a forward pick in that spot IMO.
And I have a similar feeling about Chicago. Thought they would go Turcotte the moment they won that 3rd overall pick and nothing so far has changed my opinion on that.

He is going 5th/6th most likely no matter how well he plays from here on out IMO (unless he puts up something like 2 PPG in the Memorial Cup and singlehandedly wins it for the Giants. But then IMO we might even talk about him being picked higher than #3.)

Which sucks but the way the lottery fell limited his ability to get picked high. Whoever gets him there will land a real stud and their future on the blueline.
LA and DET both could use that I guess...

I don't think Turcotte is a lock for Chicago. They need LD badly with Keith getting older. With Strome scoring at a 72 point pace as their 2C with DeBrincat on his wing I think the Hawks will feel they are pretty set at center for awhile. The ppourtunity to have a Byram - Boqvist top pairing in a few years has to be to hard for the Hawks to pass up. Byram can mentor under Keith until he's ready to take on the 1D minutes.

I don't think many people have really watched him outside of the international tournaments he's played at. I saw him plenty live and have caught quite a few streams of the Giants this season. Kid has been on another level recently. Best defencemen I've seen in the Dub since Seth Jones. Just all around ability to not only carry his team but make those around him better. He plays defence but he impacts the game like a centerman. It's insane when he's on the ice the game tilts heavily in his teams favour.

Good analysis. We'll take one of the two. Byram fills a bigger need.

I think with a good Memorial Cup performance, Byram has an excellent shot at locking in being picked 3rd/4th and no lower. I also don't see him being able to go any higher than that though for obvious reasons.
