I would do it. Don't know why Ottawa would unless they've really given up on Lazar. Always liked him as a player so I would easily add a pick or 2 to Yak if this was a possibility, but I don't really think it is.

Someone posted on our board that 1260 morning were saying it's likely he's waived. Stauffer essentially opined the same on Oilers Now.

It wasn't people making it up out of the blue.

Or trading him but don't expect much in return. "Don't expect much in return" were his words verbatim.

Why the hell would they wave Yakupov, im sure a bunch of teams would try him out for a 2nd or 3rd.

I highly doubt he'd ever reach the waiver wire, someone would put in an offer before. If anything the notion that he would be put on waivers probably solicits offers.

There's no way the Sens make this swap.

Lazar is going to be a dirt cheap third liner for the next three years (see Pageau extension) who in a third line role is likely to be more effective than Yakupov. Production wise, Lazar wasn't that far off Yakupov last year. Although Lazar hasn't been great, he has all the tools to become a solid physical third liner who can chip in 30+ points. The Sens have also yet to see what Lazar can accomplish under this new coaching staff, so trading him now for a project like Yakupov would be short sighted unless they were getting back a known element like they did in the Brassard deal. With Yakupov further along in his career and having spent significantly longer at the pro level, the odds of Yakupov putting it together at this point and become a good all around top 6 player are probably similar to the odds of Lazar breaking out and becoming a top 6 player.

If Ottawa were to make a swap with Edmonton, I think they'd try to offer Puempel for Yakupov. I don't think Puempel is exactly done in Ottawa, but especially with there being a perfect opportunity at 2LW for him due to Mac's injury, this year might be the end of the road for him if he doesn't grab the brass ring. If the Sens aren't sold on Puempel after this training camp and think Yakupov has greater potential or is a better fit, I could see that being a trade they try to make since they'd already have to cut a player they otherwise wouldn't have cut if they claimed Yakupov.

With that said, I'd be surprised if Ottawa claimed Yak. I'm not saying I'd be disappointed, but for a budget team like Ottawa committing 2.5M to Yakupov instead of 600k-900k on a replacement player would be a big statement.

Who do Sens fans value more? Nick Paul or Curtis Lazar?

I'd rather keep Paul but I'd be willing to bet that Lazar has similar value.

Both appear to be excellent bottom 6 forwards in the making that can produce 20-40 points while providing above average two way play.

I don't want either of them traded to be honest.

Because nobody wants him at 2.5M and they have other players they'd rather play in their bottom 6? If EDM could have gotten a 2nd for Yakupov I think he would have been traded by now.

Probably over half the league doesn't have enough cap space or for budget teams salary space to devote 2.5M to Yakupov without sending something back or EDM retaining. There are teams with cap space that want to keep it to cover performance bonuses are to have flexibility if they need to make an addition via trade down the line.

Not to mention, a team claiming Yak may have to waive someone they otherwise wouldn't have waived to make room for him in the NHL.

I think they'll get something for him, but they might have to retain salary, and it will be an embarrassingly low return considering his draft position. People hold on to the idea of draft pedigree but look at what Gormley went for last year. Change of scenery swap with Elliott from Colorado and later on he was placed on waivers. Filatov who wasn't attached to a 2.5M cap hit went for a 3rd.

Lazar would be a pretty good haul for Edmonton. Though they've improved, last year edm bottom 6 depth was pretty bad, but I doubt they get Lazar from a yak deal. Probably a pick or maybe a decent depth player. Maybe they could use a Tom Wilson/Michael Ferland type lol

I'd rather keep Lazar.

At the same time, I can't see Edmonton waiving him. I'm sure at least one team could hand over a 3rd rounder or B prospect. Yak has fallen, but damn....I can't see a first overall falling that much in the eyes of GMs to get waived. Not this early in his career.
