Hathaway definitely still has value. The contract is less than ideal but there’s only 1 year left after this one and the cap increase this summer has to go somewhere.

The Leafs could use some sandpaper in their lineup (Reaves is a massive liability) and Hathaway is skilled enough that he can chip in with some timely goals in the course of a playoff run.

I’d question whether the return will be worth it to the flyers though, as Torts seems to look at Hathaway as one of the “culture setting” players for the Flyers
The time for the Flyers to trade Hathaway was last year pre new contract. He looked pretty good last year. This year, not so much and he has term now. Can’t see him being traded, but if someone wants him that’s great.

When did people start throwing blank instead of shit?
Thats what I want to know. And why are they reaching for shit to throw? Wasn't there any other weapons laying around. Rock, pitchfork, sledge hammer, horse? I wouldn't care if someone threw shit at me, but a horse? You get hit by a flying horse and you are going to feel that.

You get hit by a flying horse you are probably going to die, I think that's how that goes

I have a feeling this is a trade all but agreed upon, the Flyers are high on Minten and I suspect the Leafs may be willing to move him 1 for 1 for Laughton

You've just described every Flyer GM since Keith Allen. (He didn't get laughed at, because he generally was the smartest guy in the room.)
He really seems to over playing his pocket 10’s as an elite hand.

Laughton is a decent piece. I really like him. However, he’s not elite, he’s not a game changer.

Brière could easily mess this up and get nothing when it’s clear Philly needs pieces to help the rebuild.

Sum sucka gonna get bent

He's vegan

1st round pick or a blue chip prospect for a 4th line scrub does not help the Leafs. This player is trash.

He isn't by any stretch of the imagination. He's not a gamechanger or a top 6 forward, but he's an extremely versatile all-situations, all-positions forward. Excellent PKer who has an uncanny knack for creating shorthanded scoring chances, enough talent and intelligence to complement more skilled players rather than bogging them down. Extremely useful piece.

I can see him getting a very late 1st at this point. Whether you think he’s actually good or not, he’s a veteran who plays a style that GMs and HCs tend to love around this time of year. Witness Lindgren getting a 2nd today (essentially). Lindgren may essentially be “broken”, but boy howdy do head coaches loves “the way he plays”. And Nyquist, who also just got rented for a 2nd, doesn’t have Laughton’s positional versatility or physical wrecking ball game (not to mention he’s 35).

It may be a 2026 1st (although given the 2025 draft, I think the later pick actually has more value). It may be a younger player/prospect who could be valued in that sort of range. But I think it’ll be that kind of value.

I think picks are going to be flying at this deadline and are going to have even less pure value than ever.

As a Leafs fan, Laughton doesn’t move the needle at all and I have no interest in this guy. If we’re moving our first or a top prospect I’d rather go hunting for bigger game.

Your 1st isn’t going to get you “big game” at this deadline. I can see making Cowan off limits for Laughton but it’s going to be a quiet deadline in Toronto if the mindset is “our picks are only traded for big game”. You either play in the market with everybody else or you sit tight with what you have.

Contending GMs are not going to be clutching their picks tightly in the next couple of weeks. The early action today really drives that point home.

This is not a strong draft. You’d be lucky to end up with a prospect who turns out to be Scott Laughton - and that won’t be for another 5 years.

Leafs do not have thier 2025 1st round pick. They have the Panther's 2nd as thier top pick.

1st round pick or a blue chip prospect for a 4th line scrub does not help the Leafs. This player is trash.
Not a 4th liner. Minten makes a lot of sense for him as that is Minten's ceiling. To become a player just like Laughton in 3 or 4 years. Leafs need a Laughton type in their lineup now. If all the Flyers want is Minten the deal would have been done already.

Thanks for the correction.

There is no reason why Briere should not be looking to get a 1 or prospect equal to a late one as of today. That isn't over playing your hand. That is common sense. Now you can debate what needs to be added from each side. You can say I would rather trade a 1 for the blues players that are now available. All cool.

But pick 50-55 in a bad draft isn't going to get Laughton today.Maybe next year when he is a ufa. Not now.

Hathaway's new 2 year contract doesn't kick in until after this season, he's currently playing on his old contract.
