Confirmed with Link: Laughton 50 Retention A 4th and A 6th to the Leafs for A Conditional 2027 1st Round Pick and Nikita Grebenkin

The guy played what, about 700 games in Philly before the trade? So he got moved from the only team and system he's ever known, went through the turmoil of a trade, has to move his family back here, has to adjust to a new team and system, and has to deal with family & friends now that he is playing at home. Cut the guy some slack for not adjusting right away. How many of you would be at your best amidst all that turmoil?

I respect your opinion, but what is the price of a 3rd line LW with grit, 2-way ability, leadership @ 50% retention for another season?

Plus a 4th and a 6th

At the deadline

It has to be close to what Treliving paid.

Yeah I think we’re on the same page with this one. It’s overpaying for a whatever piece on top of a foundation that may or may not be able to contend due to their own problems.

Tampa also excels at finding under value guys that exceed or outperform their contracts on a yearly basis.

Well, Tampa has traded first round picks for long term pieces like Brandon Hagel which certainly helps having to not drafting and developing. They also traded a younger player in Sergachev for some futures this past summer which gives them more youth in different areas. They’ve struck out on Tanner Jeannot but otherwise seem to be spending their firsts on a player that managed to work into their core, and have been more aggressive trading our outer core pieces.

well clearly not, he lasted about 2 games at C here. but every evaluation of the deal up to that point, on here and on TSN etc, was based on the price paid vs the Leafs' need for a 3C. anyway, like others I hold out some hope that he can meaningfully contribute in a playoff series

I'm not sure.
He did well in KHL, and already statistically he's doing better with Lehigh Valley.
Neither the Marlies nor the Phantoms are good teams.

I held enthusiasm from watching dozens of replays from the KHL, but maybe he needs a better team to play up to his potential. Wouldn't be surprised if he's another that got away.


So a 1st. rounder, likely in the 20's for Laughtend and 50% retention.

Veteran 3rd. liner (who has played center) for 15 months with a carrying cost of $1.5mm.

I understand the culture of HFboards and it's credo towards spending 1st round picks (or any picks for that matter), on deadline acquisitions.

As much as I disliked Dubas, I had no problem when he traded for Foligno, ROR, McCabe, etc. My only issue was the 1st he traded to get rid of Marleau. So be it. It's done.

it's not semantics though, the idea was that this price was worth paying to address a positional need. so it makes a difference that neither his current coach nor his previous coach seem to think he is capable of playing the position we needed to acquire a player to fill. anyway what's done is done and I hope it turns out better than how it's looked so far.

If Domi wasn't struggling all season, would you say that TOR needed a 3C?

i would make a comparaison of an other similar type of prospect leafs traded couple of year ago... Carl Grundstrom.

Pretty energetic player who will make thing with their intensity but honestly outside of that intensity, i'm not sure if he's really having any other tool for the NHL. He just hitting and playing hard but i didn't see anything in his game to say me he can one day become a top 9 player in NHL...

Sure he had production in KHL in regular season but bring nothing offensively in playoff ( i was watching it)... His point was like EN goal, weak goal or a teammate making a play... When space became closer, he was unable to do anything else than hitting and would be even worst in NHL.

I hope it does too and honestly, I'm not worried about Laughton. Wait until the playoffs before judging him, end of story.

I hope you're right. I liked Domi a lot and was happy when we resigned him. I was also not happy that Berube didn't even try him with Matthews as that worked so well for so long last season but whatever. Domi's playing great last few weeks, hopefully he's heating up just in time for the playoffs!

He was injured during the playoffs. Not making excuses, it was a fact.

But it isn't like he was shining with the Marlies.

Grundstom ... he is a NHL player, but 9 minutes a night for the Sharks. No great loss.

Yeah it was not a big loss at the end, that's the point and i don't know if grebenkin can really be more than him.

I would say 2nd instead of the 1st.

Like I had been saying it is an overpayment but not as big as some are claiming here.

For example if Avs or Panthers or Vegas or even TB paid the same price for Laughton. It is more justified due to their recent playoffs.
