Confirmed with Link: Laughton 50 Retention A 4th and A 6th to the Leafs for A Conditional 2027 1st Round Pick and Nikita Grebenkin

If the Leafs are going to win they’ll need someone to step up and Laughton might be one of those guys that catches fire and unexpectedly scores some really big playoff goals. When Matthews, Marner and Nylander get pushed out of the series you hope Domi, Tavares, Knies, McMann and Laughton can all step up and lead the team.

Still would have preferred Murphy for that price.

McCabe Tanev
OEL Murphy
Rielly Carlo
Agree, and you could have gotten Murphy for much less than what we paid, or paid what we did and expanded the trade for Murphy and Ryan Donato.

As it stands we still need a 3RHD. That move would have solved both 3RHD and 2/3C for the foreseeable future.

Instead, we got…….., this.

The Laughton trade just reeks of lazy GM’ing.

I know you don’t like this trade saying so one or two times, but context matters too.

Chicago had no retention slots left. Donato would be a rental.

Laughton’s salary for the next two years is the compelling quality, with the teams salary structure kinda paralyzed at the top.

His biggest asset is that he costs very little money, which reflects his on ice play appropriately because he plays like he should cost very little money.

Brad makes more money than me, so he should figure out how to make the numbers add up.

The upside is if Laughton does not fit, for whatever reason, the contract is such that it is moveable and we should be able to get value back, in addition to the cap space.

I am hoping we are in the game with Donato as a UFA, including using money that is freed up when Marner leaves.

Cheers.

Unless Laughton comes up with a better playoff performance I would move him in the offseason to free up space. Right now it looks like Laughton is just another overpaid 4th liner who has lost a step.

This team desperately needs more speed in the bottom half of the lineup and on defense. Laughton doesn’t help in that regard.

Hard to know if Donato is just having a contract year spike or if it’s sustainable, but agree that he’s a nice target. I think Pius Suter would be too.

I agree he’d (SL) be movable in a pinch, but I’m not liking the chances of good value signings around the 1.5 mil mark with the rising cap and a FA crop that isn’t so deep. Im just counting on him getting to what he’s been in his career, a legit 3rd liner. Seems to be getting a footing (slower than. Ideal obviously) so hopefully he trends that way through the playoffs.

I could be wrong but I thought I saw him make NHL level plays out there against LA.
He was….as a typical 4th line player. I’m not saying he has zero value because he could be used as an energy player driving a forecheck. In truth he was never worth more than a second or even third round draft pick in a trade.

I hated the price we paid and thought he was overrated at the time of the trade but I dont think he is as bad as he has been with us either.
He will settle into a roll in the bottom 6 at some point even if it takes till next season.

I do however wonder if the Bruins would have added Morgan Geekie into the Carlo trade if we had offered the the 1st and Grebs.

Laughton may well be good for us in playoffs but looking hard to justify for 1st and Grebs. The retention is something I forgot about when reviewing the trade. Plus Laughton not a pure rental. He's no ROR coming in is for sure.
True... but this team is much better.

The ROR team didn't have a #1 goalie (Stolarz/Woll) and didn't have a shutdown RD (Tanev) or second pair RD (Carlo) etc.

Leafs sacrificed having an elite 3c but we used every other dollar correctly imo.

I would argue cap dollar we did the best we could. But asset wise we certainly overpaid and are now going on a free wallets bonanza

Get rid of Marner - - a top 10 forward in the NHL - - for a no talent hack like Ryan Donato? Only a Toronto “fan” could come up with something that ridiculous.

Donato is the reincarnation of Dave Clarkson - - minus the toughness.

He’s having the season of his life in a contract year while playing for the worst team in the league. Aside from this anomaly, he’s maxed out at 30 points in his mediocre journeyman career.

Some poor sucker of a GM is going to badly overpay for this scrub and make a terrible mistake.

If Dumbas did not have such a big galaxy brain and for a minute got off his flawed vision of drafting and winning with small skilled players for a moment, we could have had this local kid.

Mind reader here.

It’s unfortunate that my post didn’t expand on what I would spend the saved $13m from Marner on, now isn’t it?

Still, that didn’t stop you from busting on through, making assumptions and put downs of other fans on this forum, as is your MO.

You are an easy poster to ignore. Thanks for blessing us with your true blue fandom.

You are a beacon of light for all the schleps in Leaf Nation to aspire to be.

Heavy is your burden to be surrounded by such imperfection and substandard fandom, but you bear this weight with dignity, grace, and a humbleness that speaks well of your breeding.

Fair thee well, Donnie.

Near zero chance imo

I think if he is a dud in the playoffs, he should be gone in the off season. No point in keeping him. Just cut your losses then.

Makes no sense.
If he struggles from the time we acquired him all the way through the playoffs he’ll have nowhere close to the same value trading him along.
You give him the off-season to prepare to be better next season at a great cap hit and you strengthen the bottom 6 around him.
