Confirmed with Link: Laughton 50 Retention A 4th and A 6th to the Leafs for A Conditional 2027 1st Round Pick and Nikita Grebenkin

Agreed. Laughton on the wing is the only move that makes sense. There are years worth of evidence that Laughton isn't a center.

Knies Matthews McMann
Laughton Tavares Marner
Domi Jarnkrok Nylander
Lorentz Kampf Holmberg

Years? Wasn’t he phillys C for years and only recently played LW for the start of the year?

The price of Laughton if you have cap space: a 2nd round pick and a C-level prospect.

Toronto's situation (no cap space): A conditional 1st round pick, and Grebs.

Laughton still has term (1 more season after this), and PHI retains 50%.

Toronto also receives a 4th round pick and 6th round pick.

There is a silver lining there. Please look for it.

I’m sure Edmonton will want to have him for their collection at some point.

Don't sugar coat the conditional first, it's still a first. Leafs got fleeced, accept it.

Just some thoughts, it probably won't happen for this game, but apparently Laughton is a more natural winger. I don't see Holmberg on the 2nd line for playoffs so for me, I'd like to try Laughton on the wing on Second line and have Holmberg on the 4th.

This appears a more optimum approach. Laughton had 11 goals I believe before he came over so he can score a little more than Holmberg can (as long as Laughton can be defensively responsible as well). I am going to repeat this suggestion again in the future I'm sure.

Had a tough start. As always, I want to see his playoff performance. I am hoping his addition gives us an actual 3rd line because we'll need it. Florida is going to run Barkov against Matthews then Tkachuk and Marchand on the 2nd line

Maybe this'll be a reverse Owen Nolan situation, were instead of kicking ass in the regular season and sucking in the playoffs Laughton will look lost to end the season and tee off in the playoffs.
Laughton plays a style of hockey that is more conducive to winning in the playoffs. He isn't a run and gun free wheeling player ... He is a checking 2-way C that hits and fights and blocks shots.

While he has trouble fitting in now, but when the checking gets tight and time and space gets less he will stand out more than non physical players that become invisible. I'm hoping for a Sam Bennett type depth contribution with a key playoff goal from time to time.

Personally I don’t see it. Bennett was a 4th overall pedigree player with some Gary Roberts style psychopathic playoff tendencies. Laughton is journeyman level depth.

Mark Jankowski was had for a 5th. Fabian Zetterlund was moved for a '25 2nd and a prospect lesser than both Minten and Grebenkin. Call me crazy, but in addition to Carlo for a conditional 1st plus Minten, we're miles ahead by adding the above instead of Laughton, right?

How do you miss a controlled minimum contract, for a 6'4" C from Hamilton, ON with good faceoff numbers...for a late pick? Or a young RFA winger, who is a plus on San Jose, who hits, plays a two-way game, scores...and costs less than Laughton, who was supposed to be THE 3C, but is now...a winger?

I'm thinking, if you move a 1st a 2nd, Dewar, Timmins and...Hirvonen that's equivalent (or better?) to the haul for Walman (from Toronto) and Zetterberg isn't it? Repeating myself to self-sooth I suppose.

Lol.

I don't claim to have a time machine like you do.

It's not sugar coating when I've listed everything else that came back to Treliving in the trade.

Who knows how this will turn out, but for the time being TOR wins this trade due to the old GM adage: "He who ends up with the best player, wins the trade". You can't tell me that Grebenkin who has 9 AHL goals is the prize here.

Remember Alyn McCauley and the 2000-01 Playoffs ??

Back when Mats Sundin got hurt come playoff time and Gary Roberts joined McCauley and Leafs found playoff success.

Laughton strikes me as one of those players that might have a bigger impact come playoff time, because as we know certain type players perform better in different styles. Hopefully Laughton can contribute more when it really matters come playoff time. :crossfing

Really? If so I might have to recant this statement and say "never mind, don't do that", depending on which media outlets and reporters, they've been wrong far more than they've been right, but they've sold the fan base on it, lol

I was looking around the league and notice other TDL acquisitions who seem to be struggling (at least, statwise):

Nelson: 5-0-2-2, 4 SOG in 16:45 TOI xG% 39.47%
Bjorkstrand: 6-1-0-1, 6 SOG in 13:46 TOI xG% 63.24%
Seth Jones: 7-0-1-1, -4, in 24:42 TOI xG% 41.61%

In the end, it doesn't really matter because it's playoff contribution that count. And COL, Tampa, and Florida would get benefit of the doubt because of past success.

For us, the management hasn't earned our trust. And he does look terrible so far (unlike Carlo). But it is perhaps quite normal that players need some time to get adapted to a new environment. I'm just hoping, that Laughton is better than what he's shown us so far.

I'm really not concerned about his play this far.

None of it matters until the playoffs. His life took a massive U turn, he needs time to adjust. It certainly hasn't helped the that the team has played like crap the last week
Stop being reasonable.

It can take time. First time he’s been traded, a totally new system to learn all while the entire team was not playing well.

In here, it’s usually nothing but lazy hot takes and screaming at clouds by mostly ignorant hockey fans.

Yep. Anything and everything gets forgotten the second pick is dropped and game 1. Use the rest of the regular season to find chemistry and build a niche role in the bottom six

Then we can decide how the trade looks once the games start to matter again

As always, very insightful.

Laughton has 10 points in 24 playoff games while shooting 2x his regular shooting %...

exactly... that's why i compared him to coleman when he's been traded to tampa. He didn't looked good first 9 game but come playoff he bounce back and been terrific. Sometime you don't see result instantly.

A 1st round pick is still an asset and now you don't have one till 2028? You gotta use those kinds assets more wisely. We'll see, maybe Laughton will prove his value in the playoffs, when we actually need it.
