Has anyone seen this described in detail, with video or gifs, or diagrams anywhere ?

From what I understand, they got the breakaway on their lone goal on a set play off a faceoff...with a defenceman going off the ice, and a forward (to whom the pass was made) coming off the bench, but I have not heard / seen anything more than this.

Thanks.

Here's a crappy version of it, but there's basically nothing more to it than what you said. You see the d-man go off right way and then Darzins come in from the far side of the bench. It's not the first time Latvia's used this. They did it at the worlds a few years ago when they were coached by Oleg Znarok.

It really is impressive that it worked that well. Canada's D had no idea the guy was behind them until it was too late. Also kind of cool that this was one goal Canada allowed during elimination games.

It was actually a phenomenal play. Should be used more but I think smaller ice is tougher for guy to surprise you like that compared to the big ice.

If I'm not mistaken, they almost pulled it off again but it was an icing call, too far out.

I find it hilarious that Team Canada got scored on by a play I've seen used by minor hockey teams

Bouwmeester

Subban would have read that play!

kidding. Thanks for posting. Never saw this game or the infamous play.

Tbh I don't like it... a team is basically gaining the length of the neutral zone instantly. Seems off that can just jump up that far

Sneaky....win the draw, pull back into the defensive zone a bit and pull Canadian skaters into the middle of the ice towards your corner. Your D-Man changes on one end of the bench in plain view, but his replacement comes off the other end of the bench behind you. Like a little teleport, lol. Stretch pass and away he goes. Funny stuff.

Come on man. We lost the draw and our defensemen should have seen it coming.

For what it's worth, Healy said later on in the game (3rd I think) that they tried it again and we stuffed it...then again, it was Healy who said it, so it may very well not have happened.

Nothing wrong with it. It worked so it was a smart idea. But it's something that would only work once in a tournament.

I forget if it was this season or last season but i remember a similar play executed by the Penguins. I believe they had a defensive zone faceoff on the powerplay to the left of their goalie (and the bench on the same side) and won the draw, and pretty sure that Kunitz went through the defensemen door and Malkin came out of the far door and was open for a pass. It didn't result in a breakaway goal but it was the first time I'd really seen that before.

Great play by Latvia. I have coached minor hockey for years and have used the same play starting in the defensive zone.

It is a great play to use late in a game or if you are outmatched against an opponent.

All credit to Nolan and his coaching staff for being creative when outmatched.
