Both teams would want to actually win if there is an opening. Winner faces Switzerland regardless, loser faces Russia or they are out of tournament.

As I see it I dont think Germany wants to push for a tie and then risk losing in OT and finishing 4th in the group and most likely playing Russia in the quarters. Same thing with Latvia.
Better risk losing in OT than in regulation, right?

And well, I wonder if they are worried about who they'll face. Just reaching top 8 is like winning the lottery for both teams, I doubt they expect to win that game regardless.

I know if I was in such a situation as the coach I would play trap hockey, aim to kill all momentum and look for 0-0. Playing for a win always is a risk which of course is unnecessary when a tie would be enough.

The loser of this game plays Russia (if it went to OT). Taking your risks in a sudden death or shootout to decide that seems dumb. There’s no incentive to really coast into extra time here. Plus Latvia has fans in the stands, they’ll be motivated to play well.

With all the suprises that we already had ... it's better to play against Russia in 1/4 than be eliminated from the PO

They probably lose vs Switzerland anyway, and just getting to the quarters is a significant achievement in itself.

I don't see either of these countries having the mentality that it's the same thing to be eliminated in groups and to finish 4th and go against Russia. Getting to quarters is satisfying for them, and a clear win no matter what.

Latvia is at home hosting and Germany was even considered outside medal contenders pre-tournament. I don't think either would be thrilled to just make the quarters and get dumped out unlike GB or Denmark would've been. Swiss are strong but I think they'd much rather be the underdog vs. them over getting likely rolled over by a reinforced ROC.

Not necessarily wishful thinking, obviously would prefer Canada make it but would be cool to see both these teams get a chance at the QFs too.

Due due and 1982 again.

I would be surprised if there is a win in regulation.

The last suspicious game I remember was Sweden - Slovakia in 2006 Olympic preliminary tournament. Sweden clearly didn't want to win their group and face Canada or Czech Republic, so they lost 0:3, beat Switzerland in the quarters and went on to win the gold.

yes sweden was scared of czech, the same czech we crushed in semifinals.

Now, what if Russia looks at all this and thinks: "Canada might be No 4, but not No 3. We'd rather face Latvia or Germany, not Canada"? Then they lose to Belarus in regulation, and, low and behold, the winner of Latvia - Germany game faces Russia, not Switzerland.

Which means Latvia and Germany should probably tie in regulation and wait until OT or even SO to figure out whether it's better to win or lose. :)

Well that didn't age well... Russia scores in the 1st minute. Never mind. They'll beat Belarus.

Bookies' odds for LAT-GER draw were a couple of minutes ago quite interesting - one bookie had actually 3,75 but the majority seemed to have 2,05-2,30.

Both teams should avoid taking risks. They must realize that a tie will cause both to advance, so even playing for a win could be too risky. That's why I wouldn't be shocked of a very lame and uneventful 0-0, knocking Canada out.
Any sport that has likely 0-0 results is a bad sport that isn't worth your time. Luckily this is hockey and not the sport you are suggesting it is...

swedes avoided Canada and Russia (they had lost to Russia 0-5 in their group game) thanks to that loss vs SVK

well what was there to avoid. canada where horrible, sweden would have won that game easily. finland crushed russia, the same finland sweden won over. swedens game vs russia was a group game.

but yeah, keep listening to david icke and those guys.
