Westworld
Episode 1: 9.5/10
At first the pacing and intentionally vague writing had me unsure about it but I gave it two rewatches and for my money it's an excellent pilot, really only weighed down by the acting of the director in charge of the Westworld park and the Narrative writer...the British guy.
The cinematography is excellent. The score as well. Some well done performances. Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, and Louis Herthum (Farmer Abernathy) were the standouts for sure. The plot leaves enough questions to hook anyone who watches in to find out what happens next.
Episode 2: 9.5/10
Gives a little more information missing to the viewers in episode 1 and adds even more questions to the grander mystery of it all.
I don't see any drop off in quality from episode 1 to 2. The only difference may be there was no slam dunk acting performance like Louis Herthum's with Anthony Hopkins last week. Though Hopkins more than makes up for it in my opinion with his scene with the child host in the park and his denying the new narrative at the end. That was a great monologue.
Shame it never got a second season.

Flipped past some Ancient Aliens stuff. This one dealt with heretofore previously unknown Soviet/Russian stuff. Apparently, the Russians have no less than five crashed UFOs in labs over there. Strains credibility so much it hurts.
I mean, really. These are aliens so advanced they can build ships that can cross interstellar gulfs yet somehow they all drive like drunken frat boys. Go figure.

Saw a bit of Fresh Off the Boat out of curiosity about Eddie Huang. It's like the poor Asian-man's Modern Family, with more awkward writing and acting.
Also, the bizarro-cultural makeup of that family doesn't seem to make any sense. Why does Jessica act like a stereotypical tiger-mom Chinese lady selling fish in a Chinatown market when the show already makes it clear that she attended college in America at a young age with a fully formed English vocabulary, loves The Allman Brothers/singing Western pop songs, and married a fully assimilated Asian guy who acts like the stereotypical sitcom-white-dad? It almost makes it feel like she's possessed by the ghost of their ancestors or something.
Only positive point is that the mom is hot.

Took a little break from watching Arrow for the first time and I watched 2 episodes of Star Trek Deep Space Nine tonight: Starship Down and Little Green Man. Both great episodes.
I'm basically rewatching DS9 and watching Arrow for the first time right now. Until probably Supergirl and Flash return (And then Orphan Black in April), that's what I'm excited about at the moment.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
My wife's a big fan of it. She's parked on the couch watching it right now. She records the episodes on the dvr when they come out and I have no idea why. She's got the dvd box set of the entire series. Anyway, this episode's about a werewolf Kolchak's followed onto a cruise ship.
I can never take this show seriously. I always think the dad from A Christmas Story got divorced and bitter, moved to the big city and got all "edgy" with his newspaper gig.

Imagine you're on the bus or train or otherwise stuck somewhere publicly and your phone's battery died. You're sitting next to a bunch of vapid 20-something airheads having excruciating conversations.
That's the experience of watching Lena Dunham's Girls.
And as I type this, my wife gives up, turns off the on-demand and announces: "We're too old for this ****."

Here's a backlog of a couple I've seen since the last post.
Tatami Galaxy - 4.0 (Flawless)
I'm usually quick to be dismissive of sad-sack overly psychologically expressive Animes where broken people share too much about how ****ed up they feel, but man was this well done and inspired. It takes the tired type of premise of a character getting stuck in a time loop and reliving the same two years over and over again, but the effects are more tastefully explored, less shallow, more irreverent/playful, and more revealing than you would expect. Rather than using the device for hollow plot reveals (although there are a few really well executed ones in there as well), it's used to add unrelated dimensions to what initially seem like caricatures without you realizing it, and repeatedly hammer home the central themes of missed opportunities, regret, self-pity, and growing up. The visuals are minimalistic, tasteful, and creatively bold/unhinged in a surrealist art kind of way. The writing is deceptively packed with funny references and commentary. Not a fan of the themesong though (dislike Asian Kung Fu Generation). Also, I feel like the ending would have felt less limp if they closed on the resolution with the girl instead of continuing on for a few more minutes.
Planet Earth II - 3.0 (Very Good)
Jaw-droppingly spectacular and gorgeous at times, but very frontloaded series that doesn't come together as nicely as the first Planet Earth did.
Westworld - 2.0 (Positive)
Well made in a typical critically-well-received TV drama kind of way. Ultimately relies on the same tricks and only superficially has interesting ideas placed on top of it. Once again, you're mostly watching for the twists/reveals, cliffhangers, and deaths.
The Newsroom - 1.0 (Negative)
Enjoyable/funny show that is ruined by cheap Sorkinisms and feels like disposable entertainment.
Konosuba (a few episodes) - 0.0 (Terrible)
Got a tip that this was a clever and humorous subversion of Anime tropes, but it's just nails on a chalkboard to me.

I would have really liked The Newsroom more without the side romance stories of Maggie/Jim, Will/Mac, and Sloan/Don. I wasn't even rooting for any of them to get together so it felt extremely forced.

Initially, the Maggie/Jim thing just felt like they were trying to re-hash the Jim/Pam Office thing. I did like the way they turned Don into a likable character after intentionally starting him off on the wrong foot, though.
Even the central story of "here's a guy who's a naturally charismatic, silver-tongued cynic who secretly has a heart of gold and, against all odds, reveals himself to be an optimist at pivotal moments" thing that gets done over and over again is annoying (although Jeff Daniels plays it perfectly).
Alot of on-the-nose contrivances in shows like this. It's kind of like Sorkin found a formula that is guaranteed to sucker people in and is just exploiting the hell out of it in every series/movie he writes. It's effective, but I can't really recommend it. Everything feels so calculated and fake.

Kaiba - 4.0 or 4.5 (Flawless/Brilliant)
This is an absolutely breathtaking and evocative piece of animation, among the best ever, IMO. The atmosphere, music, and art direction is completely out of this world and sends chills down your spine, like a mix of Fantasia and the best sci fi/noir/cyber-punk does, the thematic weight of the the storytelling is deftly and tastefully delivered. The characters are fully realized (even some of the one-off ones). The style of animation is surreal, creative, and gorgeous, and the character designs are timelessly minimalistic.
There is the occasional moment where I begin to have minor doubts/worries (is this getting too sentimental now? Is it becoming too plot/reveal-driven now? Is the lovey-dovey-ness too nonsensical towards the end?), but never enough to call anything an outright flaw (it usually switches gears in the nick of time anyways). And any potential flaw gets swallowed up by the visual splendor of the whole thing anyways.
After finishing three of his series, and loving each one an order of magnitude greater than the last, I now pretty much think Makoto Yuasa is a genius.
Still not totally sure what to think of the ending, though.

Attack on Titan Season 1 - 1.0 (Negative)
I didn't expect much at all going into this, and my suspicions ended up being true.
Very similar focuses, strengths and weaknesses to Game of Thrones. The base premise, character designs (the Titans look fantastic and hit all the right notes), and willingness to kill off characters at the drop of a hat is nice, but once you get over the initial buzz of the gruesome/shocking deaths (which starts to feel pornographic after a while), you soon realize that it's still the same old formulaic tropes, cliffhangers, and thrills designed to keep you addicted and nothing more

It may be reasonably engaging to watch and be entertained by-- but that's not worth much, IMO, and I think it's wildly overrated/far from one of the better Animes out there.

I like Bill Nye, but I saw a couple episodes of this and sheesh, this is bad television.
Not as wild, unpredictable, and natural as the podcasts that these were based on-- everything feels more sterilized and scripted-- but still an awesome premise that is alot of fun (in that same way that Whose Line Is it Anyways? or The Ricky Gervais Show can be). Will be keeping an eye out for this, hoping that it gets better.

Dennis Hopper plays a wannabe fascist leader in the US in 1963. His parents are gone, he has no friends outside the movement, and his only real shelter is an elderly Jewish man who took him in as an unhappy and abused child. This friend also spent nine years in Dachau, and is none too happy with Dennis's new counsel; a shadow who only Dennis can see. It tells him how to manipulate crowds, how to gain control, and various other Machiavellian tactics to push forward. And push forward he does! But then, there's a chance Nazi militias don't come off very well in tv shows from 1963.
Makes you wonder how things will be thought of by future generation (assuming there are any).
