P.S.

In the book, and IIRC in the movie Red Dragon, the Tooth Ferry does not die and comes back at the end - while Will is at the beach.

I was glad he died without a comeback in Manhunter. More realistic.

Fun trivia for you: A History of Violence was the last major studio release to me released on VHS.

Haha seriously? I honestly didn't know VHS was still around at all in 2005 (or 2006 I guess when it was released).

It was just a quote from the movie. It was just the way he said it. He didn’t say it normally like FBI. He draws it out slowly like F-B-I.
:thumbu:

When I first read it, what came to mind was Hans Gruber's "F...B...I..." comment in the original Die Hard.

^^ That's fair.^^

Manhunter is certainly not flawless...

One of the problems with Manhunter is that song(?) at the end that goes on forever. It is also dated with its Miami Vice look. Still, I loved it when I saw it in the theater in the 80's and I love it now.

I agree, Hopkins was "hammy" <-- well said.

They probably should have cut the movie off when Will was sitting by the water at the end and his kid ran up to him - the "family reunited happily on the beach" thing was a bit cheesy I guess, though not a fatal flaw whatsoever IMO.

I didn't mind the ending.

Ya, that's more of a nit-picky thing for me. The plot of the movie was done, so having an ending like that doesn't sour my feelings on it at all, more so just makes the film seem slightly dated.
I agree. The movie does feel dated. And, like I said, the music and the Miami Vice look does not help. Still, I watch it whenever I can. It is one of my favourite movies of the 80's.

That and Angel Heart and Eight Men Out.

Yeah, more realistic, but in Red Dragon I was not surprised the tooth fairy didn’t die in the big fire even though you were supposed to think he did. The final scene in Will’s house is my favourite scene in that movie, so I can’t complain too much.

I know it's a movie thread but after my brief musings on the X-Men and the ongoing discussion of the Hannibal Lectre films I can't resist the urge to plug the respectively related TV series Legion and Hannibal both of which might be better than any of the movies associated with the properties ...

I didn't like Edward Norton and his blond hair. Bring back William Peterson.

I've seen both shows - how do you specifically feel about them?

I love parts of both, but don't feel that they are front-to-back masterpieces.

Legion S1 is incredible, S2 is a bit of a mess that lacks a compelling narrative, and S3 is pretty good, but not hitting the highs of S1.

Hannibal S1 didn't grab me until later in S1 because I found most of the early procedural episodes to be silly and kind of dull. S2 and 3 I quite liked, but I know there are some out there that think S2 is some of the best tv out there and I just don't feel that way. Mikkelsen's Hannibal is an amazingly acted and written character, but I consider Dancy's Will Graham to be impenetrable and not well written. Not Dancy's fault, because I felt that the performance was exactly what was being asked of him, but the show became too much Will Graham flip-flopping his allegiances every 2nd episode. Now having said that - the show was f***ing beautifully made and I would definitely be interested in having it come back (as is being talked about more and more by Bryan Fuller in the past year), because regardless of whether I consider it to be flawed, it is fun to watch and some good pulp tv is always welcome on my viewing schedule.

I was going to put a caveat on my Legion suggestion but didn't. I think s1 is brilliant. 2 and 3 are a step down. I still liked it quite a lot but I know others had issues.

Hannibal is a full out masterpiece to me. Totally agree about Will. But it wasn't a negative to me. Narratively it could be messy but I think all its visual merits trump some of the flaws. It's really unlike anything I had seen, certainly on TV. I'm still sorta stunned it exists. And to do it all with a well known piece of IP that had begun to verge(r) into ridiculousness ... And that Mikkelsen is so good he makes you forget Hopkins is an added feat. (In fairness the performances are pretty different).

The bloodiness of Hannibal being allowed on broadcast NBC is quite stunning haha.

Those cooking scenes are pretty amazing.

Just starting to watch Hannibal, two episodes into the first season. Too soon to tell, but looks promising,

It’s very procedural for the first episodes of S1, but the overarching story becomes more apparent in mid S1 or so.

White Lie (2019) :

“If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” - Will Rogers

I really hate "lie movies" because watching films where the protagonist lives a lie, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Informant or Bad Education, weighs on my gut. Seeing someone spin falsehoods, while getting themselves in deeper and deeper, and knowing it will all fall apart is painful to watch and I'm always on the verge of turning the movie off. Fortunately, I never turned White Lie off (I never even considered it) and I was rewarded with a smart, entertaining movie.

Kacey Rohl is a young woman faking cancer. She has a fund raising campaign, a scholarship based on her illness, and she's playing everyone with no end in sight. Unfortunately, every step she takes to reinforce her lie makes her more vulnerable to the inevitable truth.

White Lie is a southern Ontario movie (my alma mater makes an appearance) and it's impressive to see how far low budget Canadian films have come because the acting, the directing, and (especially) the writing are terrific.

8.25/10

I saw this one last year at VIFF, and I liked it too. I thought it was smart for the directors starts in the middle of the whole plot, which allows the audience to be invested in the story right off the bat, and the ending is very appropriate. That said, I grade it lower, as it is about 6.5/10 for me. While I do not think the story can be told any better, there are limit to these types of stories, and the directors did as much as they could with it. It is good, but it is not exactly a can't-miss.

The directors and the lead actress were there at my screening, and I quite enjoyed their Q & A. Rohl has a really bubbly personality, which really surprised me. They also revealed that for one of the scenes in a very frigid warehouse, Rohl had to shave her head three times, because her hair continued to grow. They joked that they are pleasantly surprised to learn that your body will try not to let you die from the cold.

This one is also filmed with actual celluloid film stock, and they much prefer it. In fact, they said they would probably never go back to digital again.

Lynn + Lucy (2019) :

"Life is just high school all over again, only with bigger bills..."
- Linda Palmer

Lucy is an attractive late 20's mother of one, who is well past her prime. Lynn is her best friend since childhood and someone who never had a prime. They are both married to losers. One day there is a tragedy and their friendship is never the same.

Lynn + Lucy was written and directed by Fyzal Boulifa and HE has somehow made, in 2019, one of the most misogynistic films I've seen in a long, long time. Having said that, to the movie's credit, if you can get past the fact that there is not one woman (in a film that is almost entirely female) who is not a mean spirited back stabbing bitch, it's quite well made.

7/10

Edit : The more I thought about this movie, the more I disliked it. There was NOT ONE character in the entire movie with any redeeming qualities, and that is NOT the way life is - someone would have shown compassion. For that reason, (hours later) I am going to downgrade the movie 3 whole points to a...

4/10
