Who was the last Canadian Superstar on WCH?

There was possibility, we could see Crosby, after Pens lost. But he refused.
Its not the first time, that such big Canadian star refused to come. It also happen to Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, Gretzky... Who was the last one? But now i mean a real superstar on the peak. Not Kessel or such guys. They are only "stars" :D.

I doubt he was officially invited..and if there are rumors of an invite that is just mad media speculation and nothing more. I highly doubt that Crosby will ever play in a WHC anywhere at anytime...the insurance costs are prohibitive for a tournament that doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things and means even less in an Olympic year.

And to add Crosby, despite his denials, was playing injured during the playoffs. That was plainly obvious to all.. and I have no issue whatsoever with Crosby not playing in the WHC...he shouldn't have to or feel obligated in anyway to play..his focus should be 1. his health and 2. the Stanley Cup...
With regards to international play, his focus should be World Cup (if there is one) and Olympics (if NHL is involved.)

I think you need to define better what a superstar is. Crosby and Stamkos only?

Which year should they have come to play? Crosby has either been injured or in the playoffs every season since 2006, when he played in the WHC. Stamkos seems to be playing WHC whenever he can: 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Some of the players which have played in the last 5-10 years or so: Toews, Spezza, Sharp, Nash, Heatly, Getzlaf, Giroux, St Louis, Tavares, Duchene, Weber, Staal and Keith. Do any one of those guys qualify?

2010 Stamkos like said earlier
2006 Sidney Crosby

In the 80's both Greztky and Lemieux made an appearance

Crosby and Stamkos are the only ones who fit into the superstar category, although Toews is a great playmaker.

I think back in 2008 Canada's first line was Nash-Getzlaf-Heatley. Six years ago, that was a great line.

Spezza, probably near his prime at the time, was on that team as well.

I think it's pretty obvious that Stamkos came back too early, and hadn't fully recovered from his injury. Had he been 100%, I could definitely see him coming this year, especially after missing so much of the season and the Olympics.

nice. HE could be here.

Getzlaf is more in the "star" class.

If Getzlaf is not superstar in your books, Stamkos is probably the latest player to play in WC's. He scored 60 goals the previous year before that, so he'll definitely fit the superstar category.

It depends on how you define superstar. Yzerman in 1990 was a superstar. Gretzky in 1982 was a superstar. Getzlaf and Keith in 2012 or Giroux in 2013 were certainly elite, but all were having relatively off years during at the time. Plenty of players fit into the latter categories. Brodeur in 2005 probably count, and maybe Thornton that same year as well.

In 1990 Canada had Steve Yzerman, Paul Coffey, Theo Fleury, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Al MacInnis, Rick Tocchet, Mark Recchi, Kirk McLean and some good role players like Murray Craven, Rick Green, Jamie McOun, Brent(?) Sutter and Shawn Burr. They collapsed in the medal round by losing all three games including a 1-7 defeat against the Soviet Union.

I don't think Canada has had as strong a team on paper in this tournament since in 1990.

Last years team was stacked - PK Subban, Stamkos, Giroux, Duchene, Hall, Eberle, O'Reilly, Eric Staal etc. This tournament will never be the Olympics, but it gets unwarranted negative attention.

Lol, do you watch hockey ? Toews scores huge goals , shuts down the other teams best players and plays pp and pk. He is the best all around player in the world. He was the backbone of Canada's two Olympic gold medals.

Regarding the super star status of Crosby... Are we talking about the Sidney Crosby who made 3 points in Sochi (which is one point more than Finnish backup goalie Lehtonen)? He would've been 11th best scorer in Finnish team missing many of its best players. One should also remember what kind of team mates Crosby had when compared to some 43-year-old Selänne, who made 100% more points.

I don't mean to say that Crosby sucks, because he is one the best players in the game, but still he isn't so good that not having him playing in WHC is a particularly big loss. I don't miss him any more that other top players. From media/promoting point-of-view it'd be good to have Crosby there though.

didn't Giroux play last year? he's a Hart Trophy finalist. Stamkos was there too. PK Subban was there. and to a lesser extent, E. Staal

Subban was injured in the first game.

... sample size. Crosby is obviously a superstar player. No one on Finland is.

And your point is.... ? Crosby is a superstar and Finland has none. That was actually my point. Finland had a bunch of grinders and KHLers, and this superstar wouldn't have been a top-10 scorer in that team.

Sample size is small, yes, and 3 points in Sochi doesn't make Crosby less star player, but it tells that even star like Crosby can't often dominate even against weaker opposition (Austria, Norway, Finland, Latvia) with 1st grade line mates. Superstar status doesn't mean that Crosby is some god on ice when compared to others.
