Larry Brooks

I became of fan of Brooks during the 2005 lockout....he was one of 8 journalists banned by the NHL for not printing the "Bettman Bull" that was being passed out as news by the league.

But you have to remember that LB prints "opinions" -- unfortunately, some take them as "fact" and get bent out of shape over them.

People might have confused Brooks as still being the beat reporter. That duty mostly went to the junior staffers like Cyrgalis. Brooks covered mainly the major news and developments, and his role was putting out opinion pieces as a columnist.

This is so true. You guys who rip on Larry should try reading the beat reporters from other teams, if they even have one. Vancouver's guy on the Athletic is a glorified fan blogger who just rips on the other teams players for his game stories. Vegas' two guys have self-admittedly never followed hockey, even casually, before the team arrived. One only seems to be concerned about Fleury's playing time, while the other likes to convince his readers his new found hockey knowledge is gospel. Both are insufferable.

Considering you're trying to break into the same industry as those two guys, it might not be a bad idea if showed a little respect for what they've accomplished. :eyeroll: It's called professional courtesy.

Is Cyrgalis even still employed by the Post? Haven't seen a column or a story from him in 4-5 months.

Solid comment, even if a little too "personal". I've noticed that several Ranger podcasters love to tear down their "competition". Doing that and then complaining that they are being attacked "personally" seems a bit weak.

anyway, the Cap effect from ELC bonuses is real, NYR will need to wary.
And Krav and Barron having some months, competing outside NHL after season starts, does not strike me as having a severe downside.

Might be responding to this late.

When the Rangers used to be on WFAN, 25-30 years ago, the Rangers were discussed. It wasn't all the time, but there were Ranger callers, and at times, segments and even whole shows dedicated to the Rangers. This was even BEFORE the Cup win.

It just seems like the only sport discussed on talk radio in New York (only based on times I've traveled up in the baseball off-season) is baseball. Maybe a little football, but there's not much to talk about there.

If you cant point to one thing the guy has done to be in whatever HOF, does it really carry any weight?
Seriously. What exactly has LB done to be a hall of fame anything. no serious ranger fan thinks of him as the go to guy for info of anything Rangers or NHL in general.

Larry is very well connected in the industry. He worked for the Devils in the late 80s. One of the more respected and informed writers in all of North America.

His Slap Shots Column is an opinion piece just as much as journalism but that's what makes it special. He boldly goes where other reports won't and challenges the game, the executives, and the players. He asks questions that most other guys won't even the TSN gang.

The NY Beat current top 3 are Brooks, Carp, and Mercagliano.

hockey, in general , is the bastard child of all major sports. almost no one plays attention.

its nice to have an all hockey guy who happens to be a nyr guy too, who does pay attention.

as long as you temper what he writes, he's still a good solid resource.

I will miss him when he says he's done.

I honestly don't mind Brooks. I disagree with a lot of his personal takes but I still think he's an interesting person and he isn't afraid to annoy the shit out of people. It's actually bad when journalists are too cute with the people they cover lol.

For all the shit Larry has gotten over the years there were WAY worse beat writers for this team.

Not long ago, Brett had an article in the New York Times. He could be in line to pick up some hockey work there.

Newspapers are using freelancers more in the current economic climate. There are a few former Newsday and Daily News writers who pop up from time to time on some of the other papers.

It's not about what Larry was when he was younger which was a very good hockey writer. It's about what he is now. Now, he sucks. He's lazy, doesn't write objective articles on players who don't kiss his butt, he knows very little about the Rangers prospects and he contradicts himself all the time. Writing articles about how the Rangers must not deviate from the rebuild then writing an article about how because of a little cap space prospects like Barron and Kravtsov have little chance to make the team.

Simply put, he's an old man who needs to retire. He should give up his job full time to a young, hungry writer who isn't lazy.

Again you don't seem to realize cap implications. Haven't you noticed that since Vegas literally gave Nate Schmidt away to the Canucks that there have been no trades in the last week or so? Most teams are strapped right now by financial obligations. The Rangers are stuck with either signing Strome or letting him walk for nothing and hoping one of their other centers can step up and play 2C.

As far as Kravtsov or Barron--are they ready for the NHL? Just off my observations of Kravtsov last year I would say no to him. He's not ready or even less ready than Kakko was. Barron--I don't know but I don't see him as a top 6 candidate at all at the moment and the Rangers rebuild is not being held up if they have to play at another level this year.
 
It’s odd. We expect so much from journalists, but they’re so treated as so expendable by the bosses. Same as teachers.
