Value of: Lane Hutson's off-season contract

If I was Lane (or his agent) I would wait out the most favorable short term/bridge deal. He has good reasons with the cap going up, hard to argue against that.

And Habs will do what (a crazy hockey city/club with rabid fans) does, throw a stupidly dumb over payment and then, blame his teammates for Hutson not living up to Norris/HoF status in the eyes of non-hab fans.

It's so predictable, one might even call it fate.

The kid is going to the bank. He is somewhere around 11th all time for points by a rookie defensemen.

He surpassed Quinn Hughes, who is probably a good comparable. However, with the cap expected to go up a lot in the next few seasons, i anticipate that he will sign a bridge deal before blowing the bank.

Because he's not a money hungry whore like Marner? Anyways let's hope the kid's smart. There's more to life than who has the most shekels at the end of the day.

I've personally refused job offers that paid more because I was happier somewhere. If Hutson ends his career with 150 million in earnings instead of 165 how would he live differently?
I don’t disagree that Marner is money hungry. But what proof do you have that money isn’t as important to Hutson? Or are you just saying that because you “hope the kids smart?”

Mtl should be looking to sign him long term at a sizeable number. Even tho I don't think he's as good as his current hype is showing (value around here depends on what jersey you are wearing.), his "floor" is still pretty high. And if I'm wrong (admitting i might not be a hockey expert? Blasphemy right?) I'd rather not lose a stud Dman over being cheap. This is the kind of deal I'd consider a calculated risk

Probably wouldn't go into 8 digits, but if he's willing to sign long term for under 10 that's gotta be appealing

I would probably wait if I was Montreal.

He's probably going to break the rookie record in Montreal for points held by Chris chelios and it already is one of the most productive seasons by a rookie dman in nhl history. The stock is sky high.

I'd take my chances after another full season. If he replicates or exceeds, well, then at least you have more confidence in breaking the bank for him. If he has a setback (sophomore slump or injury) then the stock and price come down and you have the flexibility to adjust accordingly.

The "internal cap" is always so funny to me. Why should I take a shitty deal just because my teammate did a couple of years ago???

Chychrun just got $9Mx8. That would be the floor of my ask on a long-term deal.

Internal cap argument doesn't work so well, when the cap is to accelerate year over year. Suzuki signed his deal in a very different climate.

On that note, I recall some stat model guy named dom rated Suzuki's contract one of the worst contracts in the league.

All this talk of a bridge deal is rather foolish, I would argue. Young star players usually sign max term deals. Especially for players of Hutson's stature, the security of an 8x9 contract is too valuable to pass up for a 3x6 or similar bridge contract. The risk of injury is real, and not to be trifled with. If a player can get a max term offer, they should take it.

well the current top 3 defenseman, who will likely be the 3 finalists for Norris, all took 6 year deals, on second contract.

As a Hab fan I want him locked down to an 8 year deal ASAP but if I were him id sign no more than 3 years and once the cap has gone up sign a monster 8 year deal.

3x8-9 that leaves him around 24 years old then he signs a huge deal and when that's done he would be 32ish and he can sign another 8 year monster.
I'D like a bridge deal also.
