Value of: Lane Hutson's off-season contract

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

Chychrun just got paid 9 million with term. Hutson is a better player than him, but then again he's an RFA. It makes 0 sense for Hutson to sign long term unless the Habs want to pay him 12+ million aav (Which with the way the salary cap is headed, might actually be a good idea).

I think a deal of something like 10 million aav for 6 years makes a lot of sense. Sounds like quite a bit, but I'm using Hughes' contract as a comparable, he made 9.63% of the cap when he signed his deal, the salary cap is projected to be 104 million in '26-27 when Hutson will be an RFA. 9.63% of that figure is 10 million

I imagine he signs a Suzuki type deal, Habs seem to have a very strong culture (to their detriment arguably - see TDL) and Hutson’s habits make it clear that all he wants to do is win

Can’t see him demanding a massive contract that handcuffs the team tbh even if it’s the right move

Suzuki signed during different times - we now know the salary cap is set to explode, would make 0 sense for him to make less than Suzuki especially with the way he's playing since the 1st month of the season. He's been the best player in the last 20 games for the Habs easily, and is only going to get better.

I agree it wouldn’t make financial sense, that’s why I prefaced it with the rest

I’d sign him at $9-10Mx8 this summer for sure

Depends how greedy he wants to get, he has 9 in the bag if he wants it, depends if he wants to push to 10+. He could be a good guy and take anywhere from 6-8, but I have zero hope for players doing that going forward, then again Lane is the GOAT for a reason.

Man I have issues with everyone on here thinking the Cap is gonna explode in the next few years. Do any of you follow the news? North America is headed for a Recession. Lean times ahead amigos.

Guy's a great scoring Dman. He's young enough to not be told by overpaid guys like Matthews what type of deal to take.
I'll go with 8x$9M, but Hutson is the one risking most here.

That's absolutely factored into projections, you need to check out some of the numbers the league has done fiscally - it's in a really healthy spot.

I just don't see why Hutson would take less than Chychrun when in his rookie season he is already a better player. It's just wishful thinking imo, it's the kid's first payday not sure why he would leave money on the table.

...it's the kid's first payday not sure why he would leave money on the table.

Because he's not a money hungry whore like Marner? Anyways let's hope the kid's smart. There's more to life than who has the most shekels at the end of the day.

I've personally refused job offers that paid more because I was happier somewhere. If Hutson ends his career with 150 million in earnings instead of 165 how would he live differently?

And then you woke up and realized that this is real life and Hutson is going to sign a contract that reflects his value

His contract negotiations should be super simple.

Makar, Fox, Heiskanen and Hughes all signed 6-8 years for 8-9.5 million a year.

Use those four players are comparables. All are star defencemen who are in the top tier of the league. All signed those contracts after their ELC contracts. Acknowledge that you know that the cap is going up but also realize that you are getting compared to the best of the best defencemen in the NHL.

8 years at 9 million a year.

No. A good agent would know that the best, safest option would be to secure an 8 year deal paying $8M-$9M AAV, with as much of the money as possible coming via signing bonuses/front loading.
You're definitely not getting him at $8M for 8 years, it's going to either take more AAV or fewer years.

when you're gonna be a top 5 player at your position that type of stuff doesn't really apply to you
