Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

lol?

Defense,
Physical condition
Hits
Speed
One Timers
Breakaway's
Stamina
just to name a few

Hutson is good but PK is a true #1 Defender, can Hutson play 30 minutes a game in the playoffs with the same energy, shutting down Prime Ovys and Crosbies while carrying the offense???

Come on now.... what are we talking about.

I like Hutson but PK was a Norris caliber type of defender every year and then come playoff time he was even better than in the regular season.
This is Hutson’s rookie year. He’s going to get better.

Subban was an all world player. He gets dismissed because a lot of people don’t like him and because his prime came in a low scoring era. But he was as good a blueliner as there was in the NHL. Only Karlsson and Doughty were in his league. And he played his best when it mattered.

But even he wasn’t this good his first year in the league. Hutson is other worldly. He’s also much better positionally than Subban was. Hutson always seems to be at the right spot every time. I just think this guy is going to blow the doors off. It’s a big statement to say he’s better than Subban but I think he will be.

Hutson is getting better as the season goes along and one would have to think that the 4 nations break really energized him. He has elite vision and hands and will be a 70-80 point player for his peak years or maybe even more.

When Demidov arrives, the Bell Center crowd will have plenty to cheer for when the two of them create magic on the ice.

He has an outside shot at 70 points this year.

If Marty hadn't f***ed around and pandered to his giraffe, Lane would've been used on PP1 from the start like it happened for Makar, and he'd be a lock of becoming only the 3rd rookie D to hit 70 points.

But yeah, he could still do it. We know he can go on such a run. 11 pts in 9 games. And if ever it happens, we'll be wondering if he could've hit Murphy's 76 if Marty had used him on PP1 from the getgo.

All that aside, as a rookie, he'll will have one of the top 10 all-time best seasons as a defender for the Habs. Subban's best season was 60 (66 adjusted). Markov was 65 (66 adjusted). Lane will beat both as a rookie and his adjusted is almost flat.

I can understand Marty easing him in. And it wasn’t long before Lane got the job.

Last thing you want is some kid walks in, gets handed everything and then resentment builds. This way everyone knows he earned it. And Marty was pretty quick in switching things out.

Hutson is tied for 4th in overall D points. His overall game is getting better and better. I expect him, in his prime, to be better than Markov and Subban.
Yeah I'm a huge Subban fan. And when fans started saying Hutson will be better, my first reaction was - yeah, and he'll probably be better than Markov too, who I'm also a huge fan of.

As good as Lane's been this season, the thing I am most surprised about is his overall defensive play. I saw all the highlights in College so I new the talent was there, but his defense is really good too. I read so much crap about how the defensive side of the game would be the thing holding him back for being elite. The way he handles defending against bigger players at his size and weight is actually the thing that impresses me the most about his game. His stick work while defending, the poise with the puck in the defensive zone...all elite stuff.

I don't remember too many posters saying definitively he wouldn't be good defensively.

But there were question Mark's about how his size and skating style would translate to the NHL game. I don't see too many question Mark's lately. Even snake boiler who called him a gadget player at the beginning, now ranks him ahead of Suzuki, and just behind Demidov, as the best assets we have.
