Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

He is out of this world. How in the hell did he fall to 62. It was clear in his D year his hockey IQ and skills were genius level AND he had a family history of constitutional growth delay AND he had proof he himself had it. One of the best draft picks I've ever seen from this franchise.
A week after the draft at dev camp he was already owning Slaf in the 1 on 1 puck protection drills. I was like uhhhh ok this kid is different.

He’s always played with a chip on his shoulder. Probably because of his size.

If he doesn’t win the Calder, there is a conspiracy in the NHL. He’s a shoe-in. He’s reaching history-level stats for a D.
I'm starting to think he'll get it. His numbers are too historical, to the point where writers that just value forward flash like Celebrini have to take notice.

His pass to Suzuki from the corner through the slot was so stupid, there’s maybe 5 other players in the entire league who could do that
That's the difference.

Most players pick up that loose puck and then the good players see Suzuki across the ice and its 50/50 whether they can get that pass across.

Elite players, like Hutson, already know Suzuki is there, so by the time they pick up the loose puck that pass is already across tape to tape.

Hutson has an insane hockey brain.

If you get what I meant, you would understand I think highly of Slaf and knows he will rise to the occasion. And it's called sarcasm too. Slaf has been tremendous since coming back from the 4 nations. We have 2 impactful young players.

Sorry if you understood it wrong
Slaf is the team's best goal-scorer since the return from the 4-Nations with 9 goals scored.

Not bad...

Now three goals away from 20 with 9 games left. Also four points away from 50 again.

If he gets 20Gs and 50Ps again by the end of the year, I expect at least 25 goals and 60 points if Hughes finds a 2C for next year.

I don’t watch every game lane plays, so I can’t really speak on how good he is defensively compared to Quinn.

I can tell you that Quinn had lots to learn on with his defensive game.

But his offensive abilities, especially when he started to get power play time it was pretty ridiculous.

Other than his defensive game, the biggest growth has been his shot, it’s crazy how much better it is compared to his rookie season.

The nice thing about Lane is the sky is the limit for the kid, it’s gonna be fun seeing his progression.

He’s going to make mistakes, and that’s normal, still it’s gonna be fun seeing his growth.

I see alot of similarities in the offensive zone at least in the way these two guys control the blueline.

Like Hughes, he doesn't have a cannon, but thier mobility allows them to find lanes and get pucks to the net. I think he will figure out how to score more goals just like Quinn has.

One of the best rookie seasons for a defenseman ever, tied for 4th in scoring among all defensemen this season.

There should be 0 discussion about who wins the Calder this season. Hutson's season is looking like it'll be among the top 5 all time for rookie defensemen, meanwhile Michkov and Celebrini's season aren't even top 5 in the last decade for forwards.

I'm sure it's been brought up already but 5th i say again FIFTH in defensive scoring, if hutson doesn't win the calder it's rigged 100000%

I don't care if he wins it or not. Frankly, if that trophy means adding some Money to the contract...let Michkov have it so that he f***s them up right after....
I would like him to win it; I think the last rookie the habs had in contention for the Calder was Michael Ryder and he lost out to Andrew f'n Raycroft, - f*** off Bruins; but if Lane doesn't win it he still is a freaking awesome player. Money wise, give him what he deserves, no more, but absolutely no less

Lane has some work to do there too, and knowing there is precedent is comforting

You are not wrong. I imagine that if he starts the next few seasons like he did this season, coming to life 3/4 of the way in, given his contract and his potential, the negative comments directed at Gallagher, Dach, Newhook, and Matheson will pale in comparison.

I can't believe that Lane Hutson is a Montreal Canadiens player

I still can't believe that Lane Hutson is a Montreal Canadiens player

I really hope we keep taking chances on players like this, regardless of size or positional need, especially in the second round or later - but even in the first round. Now, we took Hutson based on positional need for a pp QB at the time. But if the next potential PP QB or number one goalie, or top 4 LD is available and we already have that in the system, take them anyway! We can't pass on this type of talent.

Probably should have taken Cole Hutson as well. (I say probably because I'm not an expert on projecting young players, not because Cole plays the same position as Lane).
