Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

Lane Hutson is now officially 10th all time in NHL Rookie Defenseman scoring with 58 points.

Next up, Nicklas Lidstrom at 9th with 60 points. 3 more points to beat Lidstrom/Larson/Beck and will be 7th all time.

Will be hard but has to get 65 pts to beat Chris Chelios 6th overall. 66 pts to beat Raymond Bourque at 5th overall.
He’s got 8 games left. Shouldn’t be a problem catching Chelios.

I think he's better than Hughes, Defensively for a rookie, Hutson has been way better than Hughes has a rookie.
I don’t watch every game lane plays, so I can’t really speak on how good he is defensively compared to Quinn.

I can tell you that Quinn had lots to learn on with his defensive game.

But his offensive abilities, especially when he started to get power play time it was pretty ridiculous.

Other than his defensive game, the biggest growth has been his shot, it’s crazy how much better it is compared to his rookie season.

The nice thing about Lane is the sky is the limit for the kid, it’s gonna be fun seeing his progression.

He’s going to make mistakes, and that’s normal, still it’s gonna be fun seeing his growth.

Hutson is already montreals best D defensively (not saying much)

He’s an unbelievable player, the fact he is even comparable to a player like Hughes is really something

But it was pretty obvious to see that the guy was a great hockey player, even after just a game of watching him.

It’s the confidence with the puck, the best players in the game have it, it’s so obvious when you see the difference between a player that’s a superstar, compared to a player. That’s a great player.

Lane is going to be a superstar, it’s pretty obvious.

There are some players where you watch them from the very beginning and you get the sense that they're going to have a HOF career. It felt that way with Carey Price and it feels that way with this guy. This is a HOF caliber year. Even if he just played like this every year for the next 15 seasons, he'd be a HOF player.

Carey Price was limited by health and teams but he was every bit the HOFer you hoped he'd be. Hutson will have much better teams to play with and a shot at cups by the time he's done. The only thing that can get in the way is health. Hopefully he stays healthy and we get to watch this guy blossom into an all time great player.

Btw, at this point I think the Calder has to be his. It just does. That race is over for all intents and purposes. He's been the best wire to wire. And what he's doing is historic.

He is out of this world. How in the hell did he fall to 62. It was clear in his D year his hockey IQ and skills were genius level AND he had a family history of constitutional growth delay AND he had proof he himself had it. One of the best draft picks I've ever seen from this franchise.

It was simply his size. I mean, he was comically small at the draft.

Sure, he had that doctor’s note, but obviously every team had concerns still. I think by the time Montreal had to pick again in the second, they had to go for that home run because they already got their “safe pick” earlier with Beck.

So now Slaf can’t even compliment his teammates. Some people don’t deserve to be called fans.
If you get what I meant, you would understand I think highly of Slaf and knows he will rise to the occasion. And it's called sarcasm too. Slaf has been tremendous since coming back from the 4 nations. We have 2 impactful young players.

Sorry if you understood it wrong

He was 5'7, I think they just assumed he was never grow.

Plus, he was apparently an awful skater. The NHL consensus is that small guys need to be great skaters to make it.

After Goal Caufield, should we rename Lane: Calder Hutson?
