Intense competitors love competing to win, and elite athletes near the end of their careers know full well that nothing in life will ever replicate the feeling of competing like that.

If Crosby leaves Pitt, it won't be to prove something to anyone, it'll be because Pitt gives up the re-tooling attempts and commits to rebuilding in a way that makes the playoffs even less likely than it currently is.

Given the level he's still playing at, and the obvious joy he has competing, I doubt he'll retire until injuries or physical decline force the issue... another 1-2 seasons after this contract ends is completely reasonable. I doubt he wants the last 3-4 seasons of his career to go like this one has and unless Dubas performs a miracle this summer, this season may be the best of what Pitt can expect in that window.

All speculation, of course, but my guess is he'll stick around for next season both to see if the Pens can re-tool on the fly and to focus on the Olympics... but assuming the pens are in the same situation (botyom 1/2 of the league) he'll agree to get moved at the deadline next year, allowing the Pens to get as big a return as possible while getting himself to a team that he can contend with in the last 2 years of this contract.

I'm not suggesting that Crosby will be traded, but I think you are grossly under-estimating the burning desire to win that drives high level athletes.

Crosby is suffering a lot, playing for a lousy team with a clueless General Manager.

Much like Gretzky before him, he's always going to say the "right thing" and I can't imagine him every saying, publicly, that he wants anything other than to stay in Pittsburgh, but behind the scenes, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Crosby wanted to play games that actually matter before the hour glass runs out for him. I don't think his "Pittsburgh Legacy" compares, in any way, to his desire to win.
It wouldn't shock me if Crosby agrees to a trade, for the reasons you guys mention. However, my guess is he won't. Crosby just captained Team Canada to a championship in the 4 Nations series. He'll likely have another shot at a Gold Medal at the 2026 Olympics, which is an even bigger stage than NHL playoffs. Does he crave more than that? We'll find out. I'm guessing he values having a home base in Pittsburgh.

I think it's highly unlikely that he'd go ask for a trade.

But if Montreal came with an aggressive offer and an ask to speak with him? I think we'd have a good case to convince him. But the offer would have to be terrific and we'd have to get through PIttsburgh's mgmt to have the conversation.

I think three first rounders would do it. We could even throw in a Struble if we had to.

I stick with my 2025 1sts + 2026 1st +Beck + Mailloux.

Pittsburgh would be crazy to turn that down.

if the pens move crosby it will be to a team he hand picks and the return will reflect that imo

Exactly.

MSL didn't exactly garner a high end return when he forced his way to the Rangers.

If Crosby said he wanted to go to Montreal (he won't, he's staying in Pittsburgh), then Dubas isn't going to disrespect him by not getting a trade done, just because he wants to be compensated like he's trading a 27 year old Crosby.

The idea of seeing Sid in a Habs jersey – even for a couple of years – is pretty freakin' cool. But I'll bet money it'll never happen. First of all, there's my genius-level, zero-evidence guess that Crosby remains a Pittsburgh lifer. Second, if he really is jonesing for another Cup, why not choose Dallas, Colorado, Florida, even Edmonton?

If people believe Sid will join the Montreal Canadiens because of his childhood affection for the team, wouldn't he feel even more affection for the team he's spent 20 years with? Don't mean to crap on the idea; I just don't see it. Now, if you wanna talk Evgeni Malkin....

I don't think it will happen either.

That being said, it's worth trying. I don't think it's a question of him loving Montreal more than Pittsburgh or vice versa, it's just that he'd have an opportunity at a cup. Moreover, Pittsburgh would be getting the picks they need to start life after Sid. It's not like he'd be leaving them high and dry.

I get it. It's a longshot. I just think we should try.

Makar is generational imo
I occasionally see some HOF D and a bunch of other former players and we talk some and they really are impressed with Makar but they don't use the lame generational tag. Next month in Boston I'll be seeing a few of the guys and hear what the have to say about Hutson, not that they are Habs fans but they are fair.

yeah its a nerdy internet hockey term. But he has a case to be the best defenseman since bobby orr.

Is that so? makes sense though I guess. There sure seems to be a lot of them though.
I think so yes. I think McDavid is also the best forward we've seen since Mario and also give him the generational tag. Which other defensemen have you seen that have been given the generational tag?
