Player Discussion Lane Hutson: Part 3 - Calder Edition

Could someone explain to me how Hutson does not win the Calder Trophy? When does a guy on this list not win it? edit: the names of the calder winners in the year in place of the guy on this list is rather impressive (Bossy, Gilbert Perrault, Petr Stastny, Lemieux, Bure)

I don't expect Hutson to reach Makar level. But, it has to be said that he's doing this as a rookie. Imagine him in four years.
This is what I look forward to. Hutson is like Crosby, he's a hockey nerd. He'll do everything to get better. Its already a treat watching Suzuki and Caufield get better every year, but players like Hutson and Demidov are on another level. Who knows how good Hutson can be. What's he done to his skating since the draft makes no sense to me.

It's definitely a real thing now

For most of the year I definitely thought it was Mack 100% for the Calder

But right now, you just could not say you would be shocked if he gets the Win
This is out-of-this-world stuff we are seeing right now from a rookie Offensive D, and we've had a *couple*
But this entire build would be stuck in the mud a bit if it weren't for THIS miracle pick

I almost crashed my car celebrating when I heard the pick from the guy live on tsn690, I'll never forget that lol

Could we see back to back Calder Winners for the Habs this year and next? Jesus
It really was a miracle. Like others have said just imagine this guy 3-4 years from now.....

Was checking the stats of the 2014-15 Calder race, Johnny Gaudreau finished the season with 64 points, the most points for a rookie, and Ekblad won the Calder with only 39 points, so i really don't see how Hutson wouldn't win it.

Last game also points to his improving his shot. If he gives himself more options by shooting and adding a bit more pace to his skating, that aggregates to a cheat code. All the more so if he can put on a little more muscle without losing that agility. Scouts will start using fMRI studies to get 100-percentile hockey minds as much as their cherished measuring tape and weight scale.

The strike against him is his low goals total. Also, how many of his assists are secondary?

To me, I don’t care about the Calder. He is a dynamic player who has really helped improve our club.

Keep in mind the scoring title was won with 84 points that year.

He seems like the ultimate team guy too, he just wants to win.

I think it's possible he signs for 8 mill for 8 years and if that happens we're gonna be in great shape for a really really long time.

I watched a fair bit of his play in Boston and he was otherworldly. I believed in him. I tried not to get too excited but to me he looked like he had superstar potential. Obviously size was a concern but he played the game in a way I hadn't really seen before. I won't hammer somebody for being skeptical but on this one I can say that I was right. He's the real deal.
Offensively, he looks similar to Patrick Kane. He has it all: deceptive puck movements, passing, and edgework and has gotten much better defensively. It might be too early to say this, but for me, he is playing better hockey paired with Struble than with Guhle or Matheson. Others may see it differently.

Struble is hugely underrated here. He’s as strong as an ox, provides the kid with an element of protection and has surprising mobility. Both Hutson and Struble will be pillars on Montreal’s defence for the near future.

We barely understand how the salience network operates. It's gonna take decades before we have enough study correlates to identify that sort of ability. We'll also need a technology that goes deeper into the networks, rather than the broad readings of fMRI. As of now, 3D pattern recognition tests would already give us better answers.

I love Struble. But having him play with Hutson means Lane’s on his off side. I don’t see that happening. It’s between Struble and X for that last LD slot and I think we’ll keep X.

It's quite simple and the same reason why Hutson fell to us in the first place. Hockey people have a strong bias against both offensive and below-average height defencemen, no matter what their talent. If you aren't built like a fridge and spend half of your minutes chasing after the play due to a mistimed hit or a shot block you're not good at defense, it's that simple. We got a 1st round pick for Chiarot for the same exact reasons even though every single metric measuring actual defensive ability aka limiting scoring chances against was in the red.

Even if Sergachev and McDonagh have been both bad trades.

Hutson is miles ahead of these 2. He is already better offensive talent than Markov and Subban.

People will said to me to calm down, but NO FREAKING WAY!!

Looks at games and looks at the RECORD//STATS.
It was a joke bud. Some people wanted to trade him before he played in the NHL because they said his game wouldn't translate. You know, the usual HF "experts".

We shouldn’t shame each other though, we all make bad takes on players at some point or another.

While I was always all aboard the Lane Train, I liked Josh Roy a lot and quite frankly I recognize now that he’s likely a bust. It happens.

I could see the NHL giving it to Celebrini for marketing reasons. As in he's gonna be one of the premium faces of the NHL for the next 2 decades , was a 1st overall etc. He is also almost a PPG at 18 which ain't too shabby.

Now i'm not saying that i agree with that and personally right now i give to Hutson but i wouldn't be surprised one bit if the league snubs him for Celebrini. In fact I'm almost expecting it

I can definitely help you "Could someone explain to me how Hutson does not win the Calder Trophy?"

Usually there are 3 Nominees for the ROY (Calder). Let's say this year it's the 3 following names;

Wolf
Hutson
Celebrini

Now when they announce the winner, let's say it's Wolf or Celebrini, this would be how Hutson does not win the Calder. Hopefully that explains it better. lol
