Imagine when our forwards learn how to take more of an advantage of Lane's ability to move the puck to the front of the net. I think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg in terms of tip ins own goals etc.

It's going to be interesting to see which two players Laine will have the most chemistry with. One would think Demidov could have chemistry with anyone. But apparently Laine didn't have chemistry with Gaudreau in Columbus.

Laine isn't your prototypical net front player. It's guys like Suzuki Slaf Caufield Dach who can benefit with well timed forays through the crease.

I put down a $25 bet for Hutson to win the Calder (before the season started) and the payout is $225. If he wins it, I'm going to double down and put all of it on Demidov to win the Calder next year.

The scouting report out of columbus was that Laine likes the puck on his stick and doesn't necessarily play best with other players that also do, like Gaudreau. They said he was actually at his best at C with guys like Olivier.

So I'm real curious to see what MSL comes up with.

I love Hutson, he'd be my choice for the Calder today, but I feel like he's still likely to lose to Celebrini. Only 6 defensemen have won int he last 30 years, and if you look at the voting results in those years, it tended to be when there forward candidates either put up low point totals or were late round/older candidates.

• Seider in '22: Zegras and Bunting were the best forwards, they put up about 60 points, Zegras was a -21 though and Bunting was 26 years old.
• Makar in '20: Kubalik was the best forward, he was 24 and put up 46 pts, Q. Hughes and A. Fox finished 2nd and 4th that year
• Ekblad in '15: This one bucks the trend a bit, as Stone and Gaudreau both put up 64 points and finished 2nd and 3rd.
• Myers in '10: Duchene was 3rd and Tavares was 5th, with Duchene only putting up 55 pts and Tavares 54.
• Jackman in '03: Zetterberg and Nash were the runners up, but they both had around 40 points in their rookie campaign.
• Berard in '97: Iginla and Jim Campbell were the best forwards this year, but they had just under 50 points.

Hutson is currently trending to have a similar PPG as Quinn Hughes rookie year (though if you extrapolate his last ~20 games he probably comes in closer to Makar). Celebrini though might come in just under a point per game, and I have a feeling many of those PHWA writers from outside Montreal who never watch Hutson and rely on a dated perception that he is poor defensively will take the easy way out and just vote for the forward.

Lane is currently doing it in the NHL so any argument you could have for Cole is nullified by that IMO

I was expecting Hutson to be a complete trainwreck in his own end this season. I didn’t know if he was going to be able to stick with the team because of it. I’ve really ate my words on that. He’s really quickly coming into his own faster then I’m sure a lot of people expected.

I thought he would get completely overwhelmed in the corners and behind the net particularly if paired with Savard.
I was half right; however once given a mobile partner who could help expedite the retrieval/exit process Lane's numbers are incredible.
Undeniable numbers that Calder voters would look crooked ignoring.
