Note, he's absolutely lit it up since December 16th (poll date) with an absolutely stellar 58% xGoals share (he was at 44.87% on the season on december 16th), moving him past a number of these guys (15 starred guys I'd say he's moved past).

From this point on he will continue to move up assuming he maintains the current level of play. Over the last 10 games he's played at a top 20 level.

Of course a lot of them voted without ever watching Hutson play so it’s understandable.

i think its fair to say that Lane surprised ALL of us alot of people said those fakes woudlnt work in the NHL he was too small etc and he proved them all wrong that being said kid is still a rookie theres still plenty of room to improve and work on his defensive game obviously because of his size he will never be a wall defensively but lets hope he can become an elite offensive dman like Q Hughes or Makar

Been a Habs fan for over 20 years and prospects like him and Demidov are not something ive often seen so im very exited to see those 2 players grow in Montreal our last ppg player was Kovalev over a decade ago so we're starving for offense

In terms of guys with comparable playstyles to hutson 100%.

You have Karlsson in that range, and then besides that you're either going up to the legit superstars or down to guys you have to shelter.

Besides that you have really weird and tough comparisons to like a Jonas Siegenthaler for example, where they barely even play the same position

Yes Rasmus Sandin, the guy who's played the most 5v5 minutes of any dman on the best team in the east, and dominated said minutes.

I respect guys who are key contributors to elite teams success, and always will.

I don't know what your spreadsheet says, but Chychrun, Carlson and Roy all play more 5 on 5 time than Rasmus Sandin.

Because guys ahead of him on the depth chart have been injured and missed games, but the Capitals, when healthy, have three defenseman they play more than him every single game five on five.

Sandin has only logged over 20 minutes in a game 12 times all season.

The notion that Rasmus Sandin is an elite defenseman is absolutely absurd.

Sandin leads them in ice time, but only if we ignore ice time per game, and go by total, and only if we ignore PP or SH ice time, and only if we ignore 4 on 4, and 3 on 3...

Also it doesn't really matter. All 6 of the capitals dmen are f***ing STUDS. And it's a massive reason why the team is so good.

Carlson, Chychrun, Roy, Fehervary (so underrated), Sandin, and TVR. All have played lights out hockey this year

Because the entire capitals depth chart is filled with studs at the backend.

It takes more than 1 great dman to be the number 1 team in the east.

You should value the numbers but also accept the fact that there Is context to value also. For example, Hutson's numbers are good but don't you think they would be even better if he played on an elite team? Or maybe Sandin would be trash on a bad team.

To an extent yes.

But once you start doing that it gets real slippery real fast and it just ends up being a coping mechanisim for fans of bad teams. Because does this only apply to Hutson, or does it then apply to every other player as well?

And now MTL is closer to middle of the pack. Do I get to use this justification to pick a bunch dmen with much worse results than Hutson on the REAL bottom feeders over him??

If I'm going to be off in estimating the gap of help, I'd MUCH rather be off in rewarding guys who are contributing to winning

And I can almost GUARANTEE if you went down the washington capitals forward roster and compared it to MTLs, these people wouldn't be saying there is a massive talent gap in favour of washington.

Washington is elite imo because of 3 elite defensive pairs. They aren't getting carried by the forward group. I see no reason to discount Sandins results because washington has other pairings (who he doesn't play at the same time as) that are also very good


Regardless, Hutson has played at an elite level lately as I stated. It's his poor start dragging him down in overall. The longer he keeps this up and distances himself from that, he will continue to rise.

Or should I discount his latest results because MTL has been on a heater lately?
