Lane Hutson Burgeoning Star Watch

Have you followed his brother Cole too? How do you think they will compare in the NHL?
No more than what has been said on this board and the exposure at World Juniors.

He looks like he'll be very good as well. Probably not as flashy as Lane but better than him in other ways.

So we're in agreement that Hutson is not in fact an elite defensive player?
I'm saying he's spent 1/4 of the year as a significantly below average defensive player, 1/3 of the year as an average defensive player, and 1/4 of the year as an elite defensive player. It's too early to know what kind of defensive player he is since we don't have a large enough sample size, but he's trended upwards since the start of the year and has been elite since the 4 Nations.

What he said was that he's improved as the season has gone on. This is his rookie year...

He will always have limitations. Physically he can't do what other blueliners do. But he can control the play. He can disrupt opposing offenses and transition as well as any blueliner in the league. He's better than you're giving him credit for. Keep in mind he's played on his off side a fair bit to. Pretty amazing to do that and be that effective in your first year.

I'm not going to go into why I don't believe you could reasonably claim 1/4 of the year of elite defensive play based on the data you provided.

Instead, I would just like to ask why you felt the need to interdict when I called Hutson being an elite defensive player an absurd take, when you yourself think that "it's too early to know what kind of defensive player he is"?

Seems odd.

I believe you can reasonably say he's elite defensively if he is dominating the even strength time that he's out there and allowing very few chances against.

As for the interdiction, I interpreted it as saying it's ridiculous to make that claim because you believe him to be on the opposite end of the spectrum as opposed to it being due to a lack of data.

Hutson haters still can’t wrap their heads around the fact that Hutson is already a superstar at both end of the ice

Are you suggesting Hutson is a superstar defensively because of these stats?

Because that means that Malinski and Bjornfoot are superstars too because they are ranked higher than Hutson

It's simply incredible how far his defense has come in the span of one season, his rookie one at that. He's already better at this point defensively than some veteran offensive-oriented d-men. You really can't denigrate the guy any more by saying his defense isn't good.

It's nuts what Hutson's ceiling may be considering this is his first season playing in a position that takes longer to develop than forward.
