I'm not sure if you're being facetious but I'm a Habs fan and that is ridiculous lol. Makar is the best player in the league imo.

The Hutson’s were one of the best bets I made on this website.
It felt obvious that they would come good. Loving how quickly they are proving everyone wrong.
I totally get it. Lane looks about 8 years old and is as quiet as a mouse and you compare him to these 6’4 210 alpha male “world class athletes” and feel he must not belong and he wasn’t made for this the way they were, but all you have to do is turn on the game and watch like one period and you’ll get it. His ability with the puck is special. His hands, composure, passing, and hockey sense is the best on the ice. And he skates (very good edges, okay speed) and competes well enough for his size. It was kind of obvious to me when he was in his draft year that this was somewhat likely. I won’t say I had him ranked 1, but I was higher on him than most. The track record and the talent suggested this would be the outcome. I made this thread so early because it was the obvious outcome. You aren’t that good pre-NHL and then bust. Doesn’t really happen on a historical basis.
And after seeing how quickly Lane had success, I made sure I didn’t undershoot Cole’s potential success. I ranked him higher than probably anyone out there (#13). That still might even be low, but we’ll see. If Lane looks about 8, Cole looks about 12. And some of his on-ice maturity can lack a little with stupid penalties trying to do too much or a real cockiness to how he plays, but he’s a killer on the ice. Ice cold. He’s not as good with the puck as Lane, but bigger at the same age, more physical, and better defensively. Good chance he’ll be a 1D, like Lane. Someone made this thread for Cole, and I fully endorsed it right away. Would be stupid to bet against these kids right now.

Hutson's speed has honestly been much better this year. He still isn't as fluid as Hughes or as explosive as Makar but he's become a pretty great skater in his own right.
On your other point, GMs get obsessed with these 6'4" 210 behemoths of athletes but ignore the smaller guys who are world-class athletes in their own right, just in different ways. Hutson is so slippery and evasive and reactive that he's almost impossible to hit cleanly. He's also so tenacious and hasn't shown exhaustion or regressed at all through his rookie year, which is extremely rare, especially for a guy playing top pairing minutes in his rookie year.
Hutson has been a stud since the start of november. Offensive generation has exploded (on ice xGoals, shot, chances, etc generation all up by like 50% compared to what it was to start the year).
He's learned to play within an offense vs trying to do everything himself.

The back and forth between Canucks fans and Habs fans is turning this into a bludgeoning star watch.
i watched a ton of lane last year at bu and have watched a ton of cole this year at bu and while cole is very good and i think he'll be a star in the nhl he's not anything close to lane in terms of his ability to just make plays out of nothing. cole is a way more "traditional" defender
Again, just showing how those fancy advance stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. Huston have been a stud since day 1 but the habs were terrible in general. Now that they play collectively good, all those stats have gone up for everyones.

Why is there a notion that Hutson is a bad skater? and more importantly that it still stick now that we have a decent sample size against NHL competition?
His back skating is not the best but all other part of his skating is elite.

Habs fan that loves the guy but he is objectively not a great skater. He can’t skate backwards very well for instance and is often skating forwards, parallel to the attacker, which is interesting to watch.
But he is so ridiculously smart that he can recover, and anticipate well enough that it isn’t a huge liability. Somehow it all works and over the last 10 games his defence has improved fairly dramatically.
He’s never going to smash guys in front of the net or drop to block shots but all indications are he will be a reasonably effective defender.

As individuals such as Hutson have vastly increased their level of play, the team has performed better.
Not the other way around.

I don’t know why Habs fans here have to be hyping Lane like this to the point now other fan bases will just want to see him fail. Lane Hutson isn’t better than Quinn Hughes nor Cale Makar. He is only a rookie, let him develop and let his hockey play speaks for itself.
We have ourselves an entertaining player and a promising young one. Super happy and excited to see how he flourishes in Montreal. He’s bringing excitement back to us fans, and that what counts. Not the Calder, not if he beats this or this rookie stats etc.
Having him this year and the idea of Ivan Demidov next year is insane!

He has a very good stick indeed and almost feels too long at times but he rarely looses board battles and more then often comes out with the puck.
He also steals pucks alot from his opponents in close quarters.
He back checks like crazy and is extremely quick to make a transition play if he steals the puck on the same play.
His IQ is off the charts and overly compensates for his size.
If half of the offensive chances he created since the beginning of the year were executed by his teammates, he would have 10-15 points more.
I'm probably bias according to some as Mtl is my childhood team but I can surely recognize star talent when I see it and Lane is on that path if he continues like this.
We're lucky to have gotten him at 62.
Sometimes we as habs fan do deserve nice things and that's one of them.
We suffered enough for the past 30 years.
About time this team becomes a regular playoff contender or even more again.
Lets agree fan or not but playoffs with the habs no matter how far they go is always exciting to watch.

Some people get way too excited. Give Hutson a few years in the league before making comparisons like that.
I get comparing his style of play to Hughes, but it's way too early to know how his trajectory in the league will play out.
I'm just happy the Habs finally got an unexpectedly great pick in the second round. We haven't been 'lucky' like that very often in the past thirty years.

Lol. If you watched them play you would know that's completly bullshit.
That would be an 18.5% on ice shooting%.
No dman has even surpassed 15% since at least 2007.

Maybe I didn't look at stats to be honest but having seen him in every game this year. He creates at least 4-5 high scoring chances per game with clear missed execution by his teammates.
Anyone that actually watch the games can attest to that.
So in my mind if he created close to 20-30 high chances since day one. 10-15 points is not that far out.
Just my opinion. It's worth nothing really loll
Not every high danger chance should or will result in a goal.
It also ignores the fact, that if you redid these chances, likely just as many high danger chances that resulted in goals, would result in saves.
Hutson has been on the ice for 56 goals for, and 55 expected goals for based on chance quality. His numbers line up to what they should be
